Listenning to alot of the clips here I can detect varying degrees and types of effects... I like to use a little delay and reverb always.... then I like to use modulation (phase/chorus/flange) only on clean guitar... and for 'special effect only' on distorted guitar. Question: What is your 'effect philosophy'?You can't tell from my 'clips' because... A) my clips suck... B) my recording abilities and capacities suck even more than my playing... Anyway, maybe when I get some time, I can put some effort into recording and producing a decent clip...

That's my question....what do you mean by right? i play covers...so if i'm playing a u2 song like "bad" and i need delay...i'm throwing in delay...we play purple rain...i need chorus for that...so i dial in some chorus... my definition of "right" is if i can get the effects to sound like the original song... if i'm jamming some blues at home let's say...i put a little reverb...depends on the application...i'm all for effects...

Well i just bought a delay, and its just not what I thought. I really thought I would use it, but now I'm thinking with 3rd gear of going back to straight into the amp. I hate effetcs. I only have a pedal board because of my tuner and the phase 90 which I need on Eruption, You Really Got, Ice Cream Man, and Mean streets,,,
I just like a dry sound with distortion. I'm open to effects on clean settings. And on recordings I think a little verb is cool.. but for live playing, don't like it..
Of course if I were doing U2 or something I would certainyl need a delay. I agree with Splawnfan on those points for sure.
IMO Jim, the clip I heard was pretty wet sounding to my ears. It sounded to effected to me. But the playing was cool!

I typically always have some delay, verb or chorus and yes I do use the loop and no I don't feel like I'm loosing all my tone. I use the EFX proc to adjust the overall volume out of the Splawn. I never use too much of any effects. If I had one effect to use I guess it'd be delay about 325ms at about 10-20 % mix. HNY all!

To effect is the answer (for me) My philosophy is if it fits the sound then go for it. There can be overkill and there can be flavor. I personally like unconventional sounds and can acheive them best with effects pedals. I also use the loop, running a Boss digital delay and Ibanez analog delay (my favorite pedal). This is the chain on my pedalboard in front of my amp as of now: Guitar--> Keeley modded Vox wah--->EB Volume--->I banez Phase Modulator--->Home Brew Octavia/Fuzz--> Dunlop Univibe-->EH Polyphonic Octave Generator--> Line6 Filter Modeler--> Splawn Pro Mod. I am adding a tremolo pedal and compressor soon as well Do I need effects to sound/play well? No, in fact I can easily play a show with nothing but a wah and delay or dry. Would I rather have effects to add colors and flavor? Hell yes, its opened up a new world of playing for me.

I was gonna buy a delay, but I don't think I'm going to..once I return my wireless I thought I would pick up a delay pedal...but I got enough switching to do between leads, cleans and dirty..so I think I'm gonna just go dry for the time being..
I used to be big into effects..not so much anymore...
who knows, I might change my mind about the delay..lol

Tc G major in the Loop. for diffferent structures of reverb and echos for overdrive, if its needed. chorus's reverbs and delays on cleans, and channel switching to the clean channel when going to the chorus patch, etc.. all used very mild. though I stay within the structure of the cover tune. just make it sound good. when doing covers. I dont like delays out in front of the amp too raw, just lightly added in loop.
