I agree with Jimbax on this one.. if thats what happens when you practice too much I'm glad I don't.. LOL. I think you guys are all overating him on the shredding though too,, nobody, I mean nobody is as fast, accurate and technical as Petrucci. And Petrucci has wonderful feel and songwriting skils too. And sorry, hes not even in the same league as Gilbert. Petrucci is a Berkley grad...he can't be bringing any circus stuff there or the profs would've booted him...most of the 'warm-up' stuff I do for my practicing is from his video...I like the tone he gets though I was NEVER able to get it from the Mesa stuff I owned... Bet its from all those Racks of gear and processors he still uses.

ok, if we're goin' from a 'pure shredding' standpoint, michael angelo is faster than either gilbert or petruci..and that's a fact, folks...and I'm not talkin' the fan picking that petrucci does..which I hate...when he plays fast, I can't stand it..more than one picking stroke per note...I'm not sayin' that he's lazy or sloppy or anything...that's just a part of his playing..note per picking stroke, michael angelo's faster than either of them..
THAT BEING SAID...
I'm not the biggest fan of petrucci..not anymore...being a berkley graduate doesn't make what you write palatable...what Dream Theater did on the first couple albums was friggin' awesome...everything from falling into infinity has been garbage in my opinion..except for Mike Portnoy..heheh..that guy never ceases to knock my socks off!!
as far as gilbert goes..he's an incredible musician and guitar player..no doubt.but some of his stuff is just way too patern oriented for my liking...that's not to knock the guy...that's just a style/preference type of thing...
to be honest, if I'm gonna listen to progressive metal/rock, I'll take Pagan's Mind every time..and if you're not listening to them, YOU SHOULD BE =D
but I will agreee with craig on this...all the mesa gear I had sounded like schit..lol

I mean, if you wanna tout people on their musical education, I'll hand you one example.. melissa ethridge...grad of GIT...not exactly a schit institution... I don't care where you went to school..if you're smart, you're smart..if you can play, you can play...Satch was never really formally trained and he knows about as much about the instrument as anyone.... if formal education is your fortay and it works for you, fine..but there's plenty of guitar players out there who never sat in a music classroom and are more palatable than those who have... then again there's steve morse...lol....

See I think Petrucci got better AFTER Falling into Infinity.. of course I love those 1st 4 DT records, but IMO all the stuff in the past 5 years was their best. Theres 2 solos on Train of Thought that just slay me both from a feel and technical standpoint, just amazing.
I think you guys are also selling Paul Gilbert short too,, his newer stuff is amazing. Listen to Racer-X: Superheroes, tons of feel, great songs and some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard.

Listen to Racer-X: Superheroes, tons of feel, great songs and some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard. you think that's DT's best? oh wow..I think it's totally horrendous and unimaginative on their part...train of thought is probably one of their better efforts from what's come recently, but petrucci's leads, for the most part, make no musical sense to me...senseless flailing... I mean, people make fun of michael angelo, but the leads on train of thought are worse as far as sensless speed goes...look at the lead for the first song...ugh..I hate when he fan picks at light speed and doesn't move his left hand around at all... don't get me wrong, I wish I had his accuracy and he techincal know how..there's no denying his technical abilities, but his song writing is very boring to me these days and his leads are pointless....there's a few bright spots here and there, but they're just not as palatable to me these days... I heard that racer x song on the ernie ball site =) it's a cool tune...I like the stuff he did with racer x better than anything he's done since...

Great solo. awww c'mon man =) gimme some credit...lol....out of all the people on here, you and I are probably the most like minded! anywho...that's one of the solos I have a problem with..the beginning isn't too bad...then enter the flailing (which is VERY priminent on that album)...you can hack all that crap out..the very end is great when he does that ascending passage...now THAT's what I like to hear from that guy! I will admit that that is friggin' awesome... you know me, I like my fair share of fast guitar players...but there's just something about petrucci's style that doesn't sit well with me..it's that fan pickign that he does as I explained before...it's almost like he's cheating to sound faster when we already know he's friggin' faster than greased snot to begin with...he can do the whole 64th and even the 128th note stuff while only hitting one note per picking stroke...we know it..we've seen him do it damnit! lol....anything else that fast sounds like a mish mash to my ears... it's just a preference thing... I also like the song writing better on the earlier albums...Caught IN a Web? 6:00? Under a Glass Moon? great stuff!!! I found FII to be verrrry boring.... it goes beyond JP though....I'm not a fan of Lebrie..when he lays into his vocals the words become indistinguishable... Johnny Myung? dude, he's fantastic! too bad you can't hear him...lol.. Jordan Rudess....the keyboard wizard..what can I say about the guy that's already been said? but, just because you can play all that stuff doesn't mean you should...less is more sometimes... the one who I can't critique in the least is mike portnoy..dude, is that guy a friggin' animal or what...lol....everytime I see him (about 5 times so far) he just impresses me more!! I still think they're a solid band, and technically superior to just about anything out there..you won't find a ground of more well versed musicians out there...but I just don't like where they go with their songs.. if I'm gonna listen to prog it's gonna be pagan's mind....love that band..might not have all the technical prowess but they friggin' jam! I actually think you'd dig them..you should check out their second and third albums =)
