What would be the best pre-amp tubes for maximun gain
(high gain) and the best power tubes to push it out regardless of any amps ? splawn marshall mesa...
there must be a set (brand and model) of pre-amp tubes made for distorsion application more suited than others and the same with power tubes ?

HI Marty, Hmm about all tubes can be used. so it ends up depending on what you would like to hear! we all change tube brands to reflect the character of the tone. I mainly use the JJ tubes. if you call a tube dealer you can specify the hotness of a tube. I call bob at eurotubes. I usually get the JJ 113 ma preamp tubes. my non hot amps I use some thing around 90-100 rated. also I usually depend on different brands for different tone types.
the only thing is, what preamp tube sounds best in what amp? the splawn I am still on the JJ preamp tubes. and like them. bogner shiva I put a JJ ecc83s 110 in V2 position worked best ( rest where chinese pre amp tubes). just about all amps I retubed. I try different tubes for v1 ( clean channel and dirty channel.) v2 is dirty channel only so thats where I bump it up with a hot preamp tube.
output tubes.. about the same deal. depending on what amp. marshalls I use sveltena EL34's with 36-38 ma rated. mesa amps are fixed so I use a little higher ma rated for clarity, bogner 37 ma rated. splawn 47 ma. the lower rating ma on output tubes cause earlier distortion. so depending on you music style etc can determine the tube.
What I liked, but does change per players ears..
Marshalls preamp JJ -> El34Svetlana tubes
Mesa Russian sovtek/JJ mix -> JJ EL34
Splawn JJ/ EL34Mullards
Bogner Chinese/JJ mix -> EL34Svetlana
