The Mic placement is easy enough, I do it just like the soundguys do it at the gigs, but once I get everything into Cubase is where I get brainfreeze. ...and drums machines, oh don't get me started on drum machines,, bleh. LOL... Lucky guy...my wife always complains when I do it just like the soundguys do it... But drum machines...Oh, I love drum machines...;D

I do believe the 30's are the top left/bottom right in Splawn cabs. I mic right up on the cloth just off center of the speaker, bottom right.

I hear ya guys on the recording thing. I think I have my Yamaha AW16G down pretty good. I found a forum dedicated to it, and I have learned a lot. Much easier than reading those stupid manuals. I absolutely hate manuals. They tell me nothing!
I just found the most awesome mic preamp. Its a Universal Audio SOLO/ 610. The 610 was used on the first few Van Halen records as well as others. Its a single input, but it powerfull. Its $800 through Guitar Center and other music stores. Its going to make a major difference in my quality of recordings. If I don't get that one I might get a Summit Audio Tube Pre. Those are like $600. The idea is to get a warm tube tone. Not a crystal clear digital sound. Analog is starting to seem like the way to go these days!

Use more than one mic on a cab...put one close to speaker and off axis slightly and the other(s) as ambient mics 3-5 feet away and not directly in front of the cab...'blend'/mix the mics after the section is recorded and mess with panning etc...We did a session in LA with the engineer/producer that recorded Motley Crue's first album...he was FAMOUS for his ability to get great metal guitar sounds....he got most of the sound through the mics and their placement on the cabs NOT BY EQ...only a little EQ in post (to taste)....so, why do my clips suck?....I'm losing my ability to 'hear' a good guitar sound in a mix....I have a Splawn 4x12 w/Eminence x pattern cab....I like it!

thanks, bros...I am going to record a 'metal' 3rd gear track this weekend...'70s Vibe' has a real 'thin' 1st gear (very low gain...around 9 o'clock) plexi thing for the rhythm tracks and 2nd gear solos...I wanted to 'try' and show that the QR also gets a GREAT plexi low-fi crunch sound for those 'retro' tunes...

Does 'splawnfan' have a picture of what a 'hairy wombat sac' looks like? the 3rd gear clip was: volume-2, gain-max, treble and mid-2 o'clock, bass-1 o'clock, pres-5 o'clock...I was setting up to record a track and getting mic levels...there is a bit too much 'memoryLane' analog delay in the effects loop, so, I backed it off after listenning back to the clip...my wife was just leaving to go shopping when I started it (she gave me a big ol' hug and kiss while I was wailing away...) that is why the beginning of the clip is sketchier than the rest...I like spontanaity (??) so I kept it as a sample...I definitely didn't record it to have others listen to it...I sent it to hacksaw as a sample of 3rd gear dimed with a Les Paul...still keeps real tight! I love this amp!...er' I mean 'girlyRod'....
