Just listen to how much better that sounds with a really good preamp. I am headed the same way with my Yamaha AW16 unit.

Those clips sound amazing!! Where you run'n straight through? Was there any outboard gear(help me pedals,ect..)? Does the amp sound that good? I just picked up an old school PM. Is there a significant difference between the old PM's compared to the new QR's? I know about the shared EQ on the old jobs, but how about the gain structure. The clips sound more power tube driven than preamp driven. Is this true?

Is this true? thanks dude..I guess I now know where you heard the third gear clips (you'll see what I mean when you go to the pro mod thread you started..LOL) yes, the amp sounds that good..and no, no outboard gear..no pedals, no eq no nothing..a shure sm57 (which I had propped up on a ups box and a copy of Marvel's The Infinity Gauntlet..lol..thanos rules!!!) into a presonus tube mic pre amp...right into the sound card... as far as the tonal differences between the PM and the QR...obviously there's the tubes...kt88's vs. mullard el34's...thing is, depending on how old your PM is your's might have the mercury magnetics transformer....they both use heyboers now... from the description, yours should be more 'modern' sounding..what's modern? what's vintage? that I don't know how to explain..lol...you can call scott and ask him how an older pm would be compared to the qr these days..he'd be happy to help! I've emailed him and been on the phone with him about 15 times in the past couple days..lol

Thanks for the heads up!! I think mine has the MM's. I know what you mean about 'what's vintage and what's modern'. Modern, to me means ginding, while vintage has that growl. That's what your clips had. I still can't get over that tone. Hell maybe I should sell my 5150II and pickup QR. Do you know what Dirty Craig has? Is his old school?

glad you dug the tone so much =D I had a 5150 block letter at one point..so did craig actually...lol..neither of us have those anymore he's got an original quick rod with teh shared eq...I think he's kickin' around the idea of either havin' third gear put in or gettin' a brand new one...

Good Lord man those clips friggin rock,,, I think you need a bigger pair of pants because the ball-sac factor on those clips is an 11 on a 10 scale.. nice work. You've completely sold me on 3rd gear. I'm either going to mod my amp or just buy a new one too.. I'm not selling it, just maybe getting a new one too.
BTW, last night was gig # 59 with the Quick Rod. Tonight is #60. Unbelieveable. I tore @ss lastnight on this thing too, man I still love it more and more everytime I play through it.
I think we should all take a moment of silence to thank Scott Splawn,,LOL.. Man, this amp just gets better and better.
dragonlaw70, mine was a transitional amp,I think I had one of the first Heyboer transformer amps, not sure, Scott would know. Whatever is in it it f'ing rules man. I love it.

I really think you'll dig third gear dude...the best way to describe it is mean and angry...and it's very liquid if you know what I'm saying...something that the triple rectos always claimed to be but never were....very wooden sounding..that 'hollow log' type of sound...stuff just jumps off the neck! as an aside, I probably could use bigger pants cause I've put on a few since I got married...lol.... damn, you've played 70 gigs with that amp??? shee-it dude....you're the elder splanwsman...=D so the QR's used to have MM transformers in them too? I guess the PM had them a little longer before he switched it across the board?? bow down to Scott and his tone wizardry..lol
