Hey Guys;
I got my Splawn modded Marshall today, and it sounds pretty lame. Really thin, buzzy distortion, no real warmth or tone; completely unlike the one I previously owned. This is a newer plexi, so I am sure the transformers are not as good as the JMP splawn I previously had, but it sounds NOTHING like the old one. I am using a good guitar (59 Les Paul RI), greenback speakers, good cables, etc. Amp has KT88's.
I am thinking tubes, but what do you guys think? What settings are you using with yours?
Thanks.
JT

sounds like the cracked power tube thing, just from what you describe, but I'm no expert. does it get loud real quick? like from zero to arena?

Cracked power tube thing? What's that about? I've been dinking with it for hours and I can't get a good sound out of it. I can't remember when I was this disappointed.

Could very well be a cracked power tube.

I'm trying to find the differences between aftermarket transformers and how they affect the over all tone. Wonder if this is the source of your issue.
Which is superior for sane volume levels: Mercury Magnetics or Heyboer-Splawn?

Well, I was really hoping you'd say this thing was kickin ass! Sorry to hear its not workin so far. I have heard the the transformers in the newer reissues are pretty lame, so if you plan to keep the amp you might have to start with that. Have you opened up the amp yet? I would check the bias first. Check the inards while you have the amp open and see if anything looks funny. PM me if I can help...im not that far away and im on vacation all week! YAHOO!!!!!!!!

Yeah, my last one was an old JMP, and it had good transformers. This is a new plexi with the suck transformers (reissue my anus), so that is part of the problem (wish I'd thought that one out a little). I did change the power tubes, and there was a little improvement, but not much. The effects loop was engaged though, and those things suck tone too-disengaged and a bit more improved. It is totally passable as a Splawn now, however, I am not a KT88 fan, and the transformers could be replaced with good ones. Oh well, maybe I'll just E-Bay this thing for what I bought it for and I will order a Quickrod. JT

Hey guys, I bought a Splawn modded plexi from a studio in Nashville. They said they ordered it from Splawn..?? Anyway It is supposed to have the clean channel and the solo boost, but the footswitch they sent only has one switch and won't do anything unless I pull it out half way. What should the switch look like and if its wrong how can I make or buy the right one?

OK, I got this thing dialed in and it sounds great. Changed preamp tubes as well as power amp tubes. Disengaged the effects loop and believe it or not, the bass was really accentuated as I had the amp in the corner of a room.It now sounds pretty good however, I really do not like the sound of the KT88 tubes. I could rebias and put in EL34s, but after doing that, I am a couple hundred more into it I am going to put the money toward a new Quickrod and sell this amp. It is on E-Bay now (my e-bay ID is r.u.amused) for less than what I bought it for ($1150) if anyone is interested.

What should the switch look like and if its wrong how can I make or buy the right one? From what I know, it should be the regular Splawn footswitch, 3 buttons, 2 leads. Call Scott and the boys, they should be able to hook you up with one...not sure about $$$, but at least you would have the correct switch.

Thanks! I e-mailed Scott and he told me what it needed and where to get one. I ended up just making one since its only three wires. Thanks again.
