Hey- My first Splawn post! I have been playing for over 20 years, and have always tried getting the early VH tone, at lower volumes, because I play for fun, in my house. I have owned every kind of Marshall, and have determined that none of the stock Marshalls give me what I need!
I toyed with getting a 5150, II, III, but with the newer III's selling for $2k, and of questionable build quality, decided to look to Splawn.
Question, if I find a used Splawn modded reissue Plexi or 800, would I get the same (or mostly the same)killer tone, or should I buy a Splawn manufactured QR? Do Splawn modded Marshalls hold up well?
Sorry for the NuB question, but I have to start somewhere!
Thanks!
Andy

Hey Andy, Welcome!
Either a modded Splawn Marshall or the Quickrod by Splawn will get you where you want to go. I have been told that Scott builds his amps with better parts than Marshall. I have a first generation Quickrod and I gig with it nearly every weekend. It has never let me down! if you want an amp that just simply rocks, then get a Splawn. If you can swing the money, get a Splawn Quickrod instead of the modded Marshall....
Just my opinion.

Bought myself this orange Splawn/Marshall SLP! It has an FX loop, and is basically a Marshall Pro Mod. Can't wait to try it out! Got it for $1,300 plus shipping. I'll call it Orange Crusher! Might end up putting EL34's in it, although the 6550's or KT88's might sound nice too. I'll see.

I'd eventually like to get one of Scott's modded Marshall...just to round out the collection. ;D

Yeah, at first I thought it was too much, but I figured the amp is modded, why not have different color cabinet. If it drives me nuts, I can always buy a black cabinet from Splawn!

I would figure KT88's would make a Plexi even brighter, but I never tried a Splawn modded Plexi before, so I don't know. Does yours have the Mercury trannys? I also would love a manual! Is there a high and low input? From the photos, mine says 1 and 2.

Yes Mercury Magnetic trannys and the KT88's sound Fat and Huge! I wouldn't say brighter.
This amp can crush and kill if you want it but it can be very "brown" also.
I run my gain on 1 or 1.5 (no kidding!)and crank the master up and it sounds like the baddest plexi you ever heard with sweet overtones.Very similar to and maybe better than the Bray stuff. But it doesn't clean up as well.....Clean? ...We don't need no stinkin' clean!......Clean........... ;D
If you like gain this amp sounds fantastic wherever your gain is set.
Like the Quick Rod it has more gain than anyone could possibly want/need,but that's my opinion ;D

So far, I've never had a Marshall that didn't need an OD pedal stuck in front, to give it that extra sustain, etc. Having more gain than I will ever need sounds perfect! And it's good to know you can lower the gain and get a good Plexi tone too!

Just check out different settings gainwise and I think you'll be surprised at how many different tones can be had with it. Very versatile actually.
We'll be expecting a review soon ;D
RAWK!
