I have a 1987X with super high gain mod. This is not the normal gain mod Scott usually does. I have 4 footswitchable modes. There is LO/HI and OD1/OD2. So I can have HI-OD1, HI-OD2, etc. This thing was gainey as hell. Would not settle down with OD2 engaged and feedback wildly if you stopped playing. Well, I got some NOS 5751's for the preamp and a balanced JJ for the PI. Awesome now. I liked the crunch tones before, but now I can turn up the gain and the whole sound field gets thicker. These tubes are a little fuzzyier - a little less crunch but very nice. I'm gonna go with this for awhile and see how I like it.

welcome thenine,
this is the first i've heard of the high gain mod...sounds killer...it gives you more gain than a stock quick rod?

thank you
not sure, I havent played a Quick Rod. More gain than the standard Marshall mod with 2 gain channels (rhthmn and lead). Its a very brite, crunchy and in yer face kinda tone. My Uber is very refined, deep and thick. The Splawn is raw and biting. The 4 modes makes it quite versatile. It also has the KT-88's so engaging HI mode (as opposed to LO) kicks in some nice bottom end.
