Hey guys,
Currently driving a Comp as some of you might know. My cabinet is 4x12 Avatar with Hellatone versions of the V30 and G12H30 in X-pattern. I was playing with some dudes, but that has fallen through so mostly playing at home now. The 4x12 is simply overkill for me at the moment and I'm curious about going to a totally Splawn rig.
I like my current cab for the most part, but I have absolutely no point of reference as the guy I was playing with was jamming with an old Crate with some speaker brand which I'd never even heard of. He had an extra 4x12 which I would use at his place, and frankly I hated it (didn't want to lug mine over there).
Anyway, my question is that I've been turning over the idea of getting a Splawn 2x12 cab for use at the house. Again, I have no point of reference as I'm about the only dude who jams metal in my circle of friends - so whatever I get I have to go on soundclips, personal advice, etc. My 4x12 seems to sound close - but not exactly where my ear wants it to be. Anyway, here goes:
1. For anyone who's played through both, on a scale of 1 to 10, what would you rank the actual improvement in tone of a Splawn 2x12 versus Avatar 4x12. 10 being a night and day improvement. I'm having difficulty wrapping my head around 2" of depth making that big a difference in tone, given that the same materials seem to be used for both brands.
2. Scott recommends the Emi MOW and Gov combo. I've been reading horrible things on this site about the V30 (which I think the Gov is based on) as well as the 75T (which I think the MOW is based on). So what gives? Is it a magic combo or something where the combo is greater than the sum of the parts?
3. Anyone tried a V30/H30 mix (or even the Hellatone equivalents) in a 2x12?
4. I've read raves about the Greenbacks and I'm curious as to the diff between Scott's recommendation and the Greens.
5. If I could improve my Splawn tone at all, I would ask for a tad more singing sustain quality for single-note tones. Not that I'm complaining, but what I'm hearing from my rig is a little too screechy and not enough singy.
Dont' want to cause a Splawn vs Avatar flame-war, been through that already - just want some good opinions as I think highly of all of you guys who post often.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
