I'm sort of new here, lurking around from time to time. I'm now in the position to spend some money on an amp and I've been toying around the idea of a Splawn. Listening to clips and reading about them EVERYWHERE....
Spec wise, the Pro Stock is what I think I want, BUT can it do the classic rock tones? I'm not wanting a "extreme metal", high gain amp, although, I know this amp can do it, but I want that Warren Demartini, Scorps type vibe. Can it do this?
Need some advise on what to get. The Cometition is something I think I'd like, but the Pro Stock has the half power switch too. Just a little nervous about dropping that kind of coin and it not be what I thought or like...Convince me. Thanks guys.

pro stock is twice the wattage..so the lowest you'll be able to get it is 50 watts...you can bounce the comp down to 25 watts...
it'll do that 80s stuff and then some, imo
bear in mind, it seems the lower in wattage you go the 'browner' and saggier the amp seems to get...

Saggier...you mean, not as compressed?

Saggier...you mean, not as compressed? not really want I meant, but yeah, I guess you could say that..and a little looser on the lower end...more 'classic' if you will.... it's not a night and day difference, but it's there...then again, a comp on 25 watts would probably lend itself pretty nicely to generous doses of volume =D

So maybe, the Competition. I really like 50 watters. They just kill, at least in the Marshall family and the Laney's. Thanks for the input. Decision time.

I kinda wish splawn made a 50 watter with a clean channel.

80s metal tone is what Splawn is famous for! It's usually the other stuff we have to convince people it can do. But jeez, yeah, what you're looking for is the easiest job for a Splawn to do. It'll sleepwalk that sh!t.

In my experience (having owned a PM, a QR, and a Competition), the 50W vs 100W vs 120W and half power settings on each -- really don't make huge difference when your playing below 10 o'clock on the master volume (and I challenge you to play above 10 o'clock and not go deaf). These amps are freakin' loud... period. I never get the volume on my amps above 9 o'clock at gigs or at practice (amps are usually mic'd at gigs). At these volumes the differences in sag and looseness are subtle at best on a 50W vs a 100W.
Other may disagree with me... but I guess what I'm saying is, I'd choose the amp based on features (like the clean channel) instead of wattage. With Splawns you will never lack for volume, and lower wattage really doesn't translate into dramatic differences in tone or volume management.
