Hey guys, I'm new here and among the rarest of the rare- a rock guitar player in Nashville! I've noticed that Splawns have a dedicated and passionate following, but most users list bands and guitar players as influences that play music that's a little heavier than what I generally do (though I absolutely love early EVH). The sound clips that I can find also seem to lean heavily toward metal/hard rock. I need a brand-new rig and the Splawns seem to have all the features and ergonomics I need in an attractive package, but I'm a little concerned that a) these things are voiced to appeal to specifically to metal/hard rock players b) the clean channel is cold and icy c.) they are too loud to be effective in anything smaller than a stadium and d) the effects loop is weak. I don't need fender-level cleans, but I don't need drop-d nu-metal madness either. I need a good, usable clean channel (like the Edge with a bit more hair and karang on it) and enough smooth, liquid gain to play sustaining leads without feeling like I have to hit the strings with a shovel every time I take a solo (Eric Johnson territory). Any thoughts? I appreciate any input, 'cause whatever I get next I've to use in a variety of applications and I can't afford a room full of $2000+ amps at the moment. Quick rod? Pro-mod? Super Stock maybe? Thanks for everyone's time.

Well.....personally I think the Super Stock might be your bag? Although from the tone I hear in the video's id say you might have to put a pedal in front of it to get into that smooth sustain like Johnson would get. I also think you could probably get the QR to do what your talkin about by backing off the gain in gear 1/OD 1, then switching to 2nd gear for leads and you wont need an OD pedal with the QR. The stories of the QR clean channel sucking are overblown in my opinion. It works good for me and many here will say the same.I think to say your gonna get a tone similar to The Edge would be exaggerating a bit.His clean tone is pretty sweet. Ive used the loop at lower volumes while at home practicing and I dont have an issue with the loop either, but I dont use the loop live. One last thing....the QR is the best sounding low volume 100 watt amp ive ever owned....trust me...ive had a lot!

Hey Jonny Rocks. I am also a Newbie. I play old Marshall's and do not like to much gain. I prefer Power tube gain as to Pre amp gain. I think you might be happy with the Super Stock that's the one that I am going to get as soon as money allows. Find the Google video of Scott playing his amps at the convention. He does a demo of the Super Stock that sounds Great. It has EL 34's in it. You could go with KT 88's to clean up the sound even more.

Thanks for the info and opinions, everybody. I notice VomHalen is in Fairfield, CT- I grew up in Litchfield, CT and my folks still live there. I miss the weather, and the leaves this time of year! Thanks again, and any more opinions/war stories would be welcome. Sounds like I need to get on the waiting list...

Whoa! Just listened to mixolydian's clip (great playing), and that pretty much answers my question about the clean channel- he even plays a little U2 in there! I assume that's the Quickrod- if so consider me sold! P.S.- anyone ever use THD yellowjackets in a Splawn? I hear mixed reviews. Thanks again, everybody

Yep, Quickrod. If I remember correctly, he used greenbacks on that clip, and had the bass knob down quite a ways (like 9:00 or something). Unless that was another of his clips...maybe he'll see this and chime in. But whatever works to coax some different sounds out if it. I bugged the crap out of some people when I was checking these things out. So I half remember all of these little details... The Superstock is voiced the same but less gain and little less compression, according to what Scott was saying in the vid. So if not the QR, maybe the superstock?
