Does anybody use 3rd gear in their Pro Mod? I honestly never do because it too noisy for me. I'm wondering if anybody else has this problem or there's something wrong with my amp set/set up.
I get all kinds of hiss and the noise floor goes up substantially whenever I switch to 3rd gear, even with the gain lowered. Maybe my pickups are microphonic or maybe it's my pedalboard. I have about 13 pedals but I have never had a problem with noise, especially since I use the Pedal Power 2 to power all of them.
Maybe once I retube, it will go away?

Hey DD, I can't speak for the Pro Mod but my Pro Stock is pretty much silent in third gear. Good luck.

My quickrod is noisier in 3rd gear. Its not unmanageable though . I just figured it was because of the higher gain . More gain usually = more noise

I have a QR as well, and it does tend to get noisy in 3rd gear - as in, I can walk into the next room and it sounds like a pack of wild bees. I'm not into the super saturation too much, so I don't really go past 2nd gear/OD 2. Its not a big deal for me. I don't think it would be your pedals, as mine gets progressively noisier as I go up the gears with my guitar plugged straight in, or even with no guitar plugged in at all. I use a DC Brick to power my pedals and the amount of hum/hiss/white noise is pretty much exactly the same whether through the chain or straight in. I guess its just one of the "perks" of playing a high gain amplifier.

'a pack of wild bees'?? sounds like there may be someting wrong with your amp...the noise will go up because of the added gain that you're getting from third gear but it shouldn't be anywhere near that bad....and I used to play in third gear exclusively

More gain usually = more noise I expect it to be noiser for those resons but honestly, I can't even use 3rd gear because it is overbearingly noisy. You can't even hear yourself talking in the practice space. This is only when the amp is turned up to about 8-9:00.

After hearing people that gig on 3rd gear it makes me think that there is something wrong with mine because I don't think I could play it at a gig. I think I really need to retube it.

Have you retubed your amp yet? Where did you take it. There is a tech up in Edison that is good but that's like 1.5 hours away. There are no more amp techs around here anymore.

I've had several sets of tubes put in my amp...I have a couple friends with bias rites that know how to do it...but now that it's all biased up and I have the new tube values I can just swap them.. anywho, that time you saw my old band i was in third gear the whole night...and it wasn't as noisy as you describe...

I would love to sit down with a tech or someone who knows what they are doing and fine tune it. I absolutley hate just dropping an amp off and having someone bias it for me. How do they know how I want the amp to sound? I never trusted the guy I used to go to but he was conveinently in Point Pleasant but he is gone now. Probably because he half-assed everything. You weren't noisy at that gig I saw you at at all. Maybe new tubes will cure this.

I'm not about t o risk my life by reading instructions on a manual or a website, ya know? I need a full retube. The amp is 2 years old and still has the originals.

I hear ya dude..even after I saw it done twice, I still asked vlad to do it for me...lol...I know I'm a moron so I could easily do something wrong..as long as you don't complete a circuit, ie, bridge two metal parts of the circuit with a screwdriver or something you're ok yeah dude..time for ne wtubes!

Would you feel comfortable doing it by yourself? I am not completely incapable of doing stuff like that. I have modded a few pedals myself but then again a pedal won't kill me if I touch it the wrong way!
