i play a pro mod through a splawn 4x12 with a LP classic with stock pickups. for some reason i can not seem to produce sick pinch harmonics that i can with other amplifiers. i have also played a marshall dsl100, and peavey 5150, and i can get these insanely clear pinch harmonics from those amps. i know its not old strings, lack of output/gain. i think it might just be the gain structure of the pro mod? i'm not sure.
its almost like the marshalls and peaveys have some kind of compressed sound to them. but would that have an effect on the pinch harmonics? has anyone else encountered this problem?
i can still get the harmonics ok, but i really, really have to work for them.
otherwise that thing freaking roars!

thats just the nature of the beast it shows up your mistakes, and the dsl100 and 5150 are probably the two most forgiving amps i've ever played.. the Pro Mod will seem a lot more stiff and you might have trouble playing some of those big leggato licks and realise your alternate picking technique isnt quite as great as you thought.. but once u've sorted your technique out u'll be a better player.
I've used a 5150II for various recordings simply because of how forgiving it can be, which is great for some situations.. but Since i got my Splawn i've come on a lot as a player.

You will have to work harder for them but it will make you play better. OTOH, using a boost to add some saturation will help you get those pinch harmonics easier.

agreed. it has been making me a better player.
thats why i really respect dudes like paul gilbert, b/c he can use barely any gain but his licks still come out strong. most of a player's tone is in their hands!

the quickrod is like that somewhat.. where is your presence etc set at.. maybe just a little more and a adjustment on the pinch location.. may need to be a little more acurate finding it.. ?? just a thought..

as for my settings, my eq is flat and my presence is around 1-2 o clock.
i solved the problem completely. i raised my action a tad and moved the bridge pickup closer to the strings. now i can get the same insane "zakk wlyde-ish" harmonics that i can with any other "more forgiving" amp.

Good deal. Guitar set-up can definitely have a big effect on what kind of harmonics you are getting.
