Here is the deal...I have a newer model pro-mod, and splawn cab (celestion 75 and 30's), les paul classic, and a few pedals (line 6 mm4, fulltone clyde deluxe wah, and boss dd-6.) I have been somewhat frustrated over the last few weeks trying to dial in a clean sound that I am happy with. I have to admit, it seems like I get a hollow sound no matter what I do. As far as EQ, treble and bass are just about set at 12 o'clock. I do run a hotplate, so I can crank the volume way up, so perhaps I should back the gain way down? Any suggestions are welcomed! Help me find that clean clean sound I have been looking for! Thanks, andy

Well, I can try! My main concern, I guess, is that on the clean channel, the tone I am getting is not very full or lush. It tends to break easily. I have backed the gain way down, but it still seems to be not as full as I want it. I had a friend suggest I might want to change the pre-amp tubes...but I am not sure I want to go that far yet or if that is even necessary. Specific examples of clean; anything by the police or u2.

No single amplifier/cab/speaker does All sounds well, IMHO. If you set the gains to really nice crunch, the cleans suffer and vice versa.
Speakers that breakup nicely for crunch sounds aren't usually the best for clean sounds. I find that the best clean sounds come from speakers like EVM-12Ls (rated at 200watts) or JBL D120s (rated at 120watts) but these are crappy crunch speakers as they are rated too high to really drive the speaker until you get to 'ear bleeding' volumes. Greenbacks (rated at 25/30watts depending on M or H model) break up great at managable volume but don't give the clarity you might need. Vintage 30s (rated at 60watts) or G75Ts (rated at 75watts) are in the middle but again you are going to compromise something, somewhere. YMMV
If you are running very hot pickups you may not ever get the clean sound that you are trying for. Single coils can give you bell like tone that can be fuller when you back off the volume and tone controls a little. You can do this with Humbuckers too but it doesn't work as well. Try getting the best clean sound that you can with the neck pickup and then back the guitar volume off slightly and then try backing off the tone control. This helps immensely. I use guitars that have both humbuckers and single coil pickups on the guitar. And the humbuckers are not High Output. I find that I like the definition a medium gain humbucker gives me if I'm using a High Gain amp over the massive mud I get with high output PUs. If I want that kind of a sound for a specific I just throw a pedal in the chain. I also like coil taps to be able to split the humbucker or run it out of phase.
You might have to be satisfied with you 'Live' clean being less than pristine and when you record set the amp up accordingly to get the clean sound you want without sacraficing the gain sounds. People in the audience will not really notice and you can keep from going crazy from trying to make one amp and one cab do everything that you want it to do, which is probably not possible.
Hope that helps. Steve

I haven't even played a Splawn yet (I have QR due in May), but I would highly recommend experimenting with preamp tubes based on my experience with other amps. You can significantly alter the tone or feel and it's not too expensive to try. I like the new Tung Sols myself, and they run about $15 a pop. You can find cheaper ones in the $7 range.
