I spoke with the guys at Splawn and the Pro Mod will take 5881 or 6L6s, will just need a rebias. Also I was told that I could remove one of the piggy backed bias resistors and I could run EL34s too. I just ordered a set of Sventlana 6550s from Doug @ dougstube as close to the same price as a good 6L6 so I'm going to try them first. Doug was saying he liked these better than JJ KT88s, which is what this amp has. I ordered a matched sovtek for the PI socket and I've got a couple of combinations I'm going to try with V1 and V2, most likely Tung Sols or Long plate Sovteks.
This is my favorite amp at the moment, I think I'll be keeping this one around for a while. For what I gave for it I cannot complain.

yea it's a 47k resistor strapped over the 22k resistor labeled "R30", or it was in my amp anyway. I installed this resistor to turn my Competition into a KT88 amp, I might try 6L6's ooooh I like those puppies!

To go from 6550's to EL34's on my 78 Marshall JMP, I had to ADD a resistor, to lower the bias range since EL34's have a lower range than 6550's. Are Splawn amps the opposite??

I need to put new tubes in my Pro Mod. What brands are you guys using? I am thinking about the Winged "C" tubes since they seem to get good reviews. I'll probably just stick with JJ's in the preamp but I want to try some different power tubes.

hey Donald, i am running tung sols all around and i like the tung sols more than the jjs in the pre amp!! not a night and day difference but noticeable! i have the tung sol 6550s in the power amp and will be replacing them with the tung sols when i do a tube change, they sound GREAT!! the only thing is right now i am on the fence about getting a new amp!! i REALLY,REALLY love the vht deliverance 120 and the new evh head but i don't know if they are a big enough step up to get rid of my splawn for!! i am going to try both out Monday with my axe and OD808 to get the final verdict but the vht is in the lead right now.

Keep the Splawn! If I could I would keep my Splawn if I was buying another amp but I know it's not always possible. I have gone through a lot of amps by trading/selling and rebuying and I never own more than one head at a time. I'll look into the Tung-Sol's. Are they the reissiues?
