I have a chance to pick up one of the older Pro Mods that has the shared EQ for both the Clean and Gain channels. It is the Marshall styled chassis that Scott has replaced 2 of the inputs with Volume Pots and looks like it only has Gear 1 and 2. It has the 2 button footswitch for channel selection and boost. Heyboer trannies.
My Question:
Even though this is a chassis that is not being used any longer is it the same gain sounds as the new versions?
I think this amp is going for about $1500, is there a reason I should pass on this and just order a new one, (*besides the obvious separate channel EQs and improved clean channel)?
I like having an amp that I can just roll the guitar volume back on that cleans up for most rhythm playing. And I want an amp that is super responsive to my tone controls, pick attack, playing with just my fingers, etc.
This amp is at a local music store so I don't think they will come down on the price unless it sits there for a while and IF it is a good deal and I like the tone I'm just trying to figure out what I'll be giving up to get this one and avoiding the wait.
Thanks up front for the replies.

hmm.. 1500 seems a little steep. If you are interested i have an older pro mod i will sell for cheaper.
Are you sure it has a gear 1 and 2?? maybe its just the OD1/OD2?I may be mistaken but i always thought they had a 3 button footswitch. Does this ProMod have the half power switch?

My bad. It is OD1 & 2, 3 button switch, 1/2 power switch. There is a picture on the SplawnAmplification home page of the same model, The 'Quilt Maple panel by McNaught', 8 knobs, 2 inputs.
Will it sound like the new ones on the Drive channel?
jacka199, how much do you want for yours?
I'm going to play the one here Friday morning.

I played this amp today. I liked it. It has Mercury Magnetics Trannies and a choke. I never got it off of 1/2 power and it can get very loud. I didn't get why everyone complains about the clean channel, it wasn't that bad. I own worse. A better fit would be having one with a separate EQ and with a little more control on the volume. I can certainly see why the new ones are built like that. Does anyone know why Scott quit using these and went with Heyboers? I'm guessing cost but this is one more thing I have to figure out if I want over ordering a new one or buying a less expensive one from another forumite. They said they would take $1350 which doesn't sound that bad for a Supped up Marshall sound with MM trannies.

scott simply switched over to Heyboer because they sound better, I believe someone suggested he tried them and he was bowled over by the sound.. they're somewhat cheaper but in no way inferior..

I'm pretty confident that you'd be happy with ANY of the Splawn amps. Myself though...I wouldn't pay more than 1200.00 for an older Splawn (price-wise). The trannies are different but the tone is not that different. I MISS my old PS with the MM trannies FWIW. Good luck man.

Oh, I bought this amp. n0fx, this sounds like your modded Marshall and you were right, I am very pleased with it.
I gave $1053 plus a 4x12 and a delay pedal I had that wasn't being used. I was happy with the deal and so was GC.
