I have may have a bad jj kt88. I have microphonic feedback and it acts up when I tap on the outside tube. Its fine on half power.
Im going to try and get the sockets looked at and maybe just try removing the tubes and moving them around.
If I need new tubes, are there any that I should try? Any one tried 6550s? Is there anything that has a bit more low mids? (125,250,350 hz) Maybe also a little dirtier?
I like the sound of the jjs but I would say if I had to complain, I would love more midrange growl. The low end is great but the crunch is almost too "nice" sometimes.
Too bad I cant try the kt77

The Sovteks seem very boomy to me with too much emphasis on the higher midrange frequencies. The JJ's are a little darker but have a better sound IMO. Electro Harmonix also makes a KT88 but I have not tried them. I guess the 6550's would be a direct swap in with a bias and I hear good things about the Groove Tube 6550-R's. I hear ya on the KT77's, I wish I would have ordered my head with them. Every Splawn soundclip I hear with the KT77's sounds killer!

for my money and IMHO you will be VERY HAPPY with 6550s i have them in my pro mod and i asked for them!!!(that is why i said for my money to start this off)they have a great midrange growl and i think they are a little grittier than the other tubes. it is a really focused low end with those tubes(6550) with most amps and tubes i have tried the low end is more of a tight rumbleish, shake the floor boards, hit you in you gut feeling. with those babies it feels like someone is punching you in the chest REALLY TIGHT AND PUNCHY!!! i say for what you described you are looking for in your sound that IS the way to go for you.

Well, I did some moving aroun of the power tubes and while one is still definitely microphonic ,it's not sitting there humming from vibration. Its stable. But I may experiment with new tubes anyway.
With the jj's I definetely have rumble and thump but after listening to my recordings, I dont have enough of that "throat" in the mid bass.More of an emphasis in the upper mids. I was thinking of trying the EH 6550's or the TUNG SOL 6550. Does anyone know what Rich Ward is using in his pro mod ? I know he used 6550's in his marshalls. I like his tone on the new mojo but I use a tad less gain. That sounds like gear two or 3 and I lean towards maxing out gear one. That way I can afford to turn the low end up more without it sounding like the speakers are going to rip! I do like gear two though, its just that the lack of low mids is more of a problem with that gear.
Thanks for the advice guys!

rich uses 6550s in his pro mod,and i don't know what he recorded with but live he was using gear 2, gain dimed. he IS the reason i went with the 6550s as well,i loved his sound from his duke of metal (bradshaw modded marshall) and his new sound is just as nasty!! i know (again from owning them ) that the tung sol 6550s are AWESOME!! i love my tone right now and i think you should check those tubes out,you won't be disappointed!! i have been running gear two, gain dimed, with a zw-44 in front as a clean boost and it WILL rip you a new one!! but i am a gain freak so that is what works for me,but again, from what you have describe you are looking for i think you'll be happy as well. later man,let me know if you swap them and what you think!!

Wow! Gain dimed on gear two! I usually run gear two about 6 o7 or say 1 or 2 O'clock as they like to say here. But I kind of have eclectic taste, most guys either like the chunky metal sound or the classic or 80's vibe.I'm kinda in the middle ,I like both. I like to roll my volume back for clean, I like chunky rythyms and I like to switch to a single coil neck sound sometimes. So ,you cant have it all ,but I'm trying to get a well rounded tone. My bandmates dont like it when I run gear 1 cause its not chunky enough on the rythyms, but I sure do love the way it cries on leads.
Thanks for tip, I will try the tung sols!

Hey edgebsl, you wouldn't happen to be Jeremy from Til December (former Backstreet Law) would you. I am guessing that you are from your username and the fact that Jamie told me you got a Splawn. This is JC Holleran. How have you been?
Anyway, I have a ProMod as well (version just before the clean channel upgrade). I have the JJ KT88's in there. I like them, but they seem a little too compressed and hi-fi sounding. I am going to try EH KT88's in there next. I have them in my VHT UL and I love them in that. The VHT however did not like the JJ's at all. For what it is worth I use Gear 3 with the gain only on about 9:00-10:00 and I use an RC Booster as a clean boost in front. It makes the amp very tight. Not as tight as my VHT, but close.

You found me! How's it been JC!
I was actually hoping you got a quick rod so we could compare em side by side sometime. I definitely want to try those tung sol 6550's . Who biases your amps JC? I love using Glenn Thorpe (from Ice Water Mansion), great work and very reasonable prices, but he's so far away.
Brian were playing Paparazzi in frackville on Friday so if you can make it out ,let me know and I''ll put you on the guest list!

Tell em I said hi. I debated for a while over whether to get a QR or PM. I decided to try the PM cause I had never tried a KT88/6550 based amp before. I wanted something with more upper mids from my other amps but still somewhat modern sounding. I am glad I went with the PM, I just wish I had waited about 6 mo. so I could have gotten the updated clean channel. I bias my own amps because I have a weber bias rite. I don't work on them myself, but I can handle a bias. If you get new tubes and want me to bias your amp for you just let me know. I would be more than happy to. I still live in Elmira, so it wouldn't be that far of a drive for you when you are back home. Do you still have your 2205? You running that and the Splawn in stereo? Like I said before, I also have VHT UL which I love. I have the Splawn PM with a Splawn 412 cab and the VHT with (2) VHT 412 cab's. I love both amps, but the VHT is more versatile so I have been using that more lately.

Brian I sent you an email with my cell number. We can have a splawn shootout!
That will definitely be cool.
And J.C. .I'll take you up on that bias if Brian's Splawn smokes mine! lol I have a feeling it will. Only x factor is that my splawn is the earlier version with the 2 inputs and no 3rd gear. But should still give a pretty good idea.
JC the 2205 started falling apart on me after years of road abuse, caps choke etc. plus I didnt like some of the mods Trace did (sound familiar? lol) so I didnt want to take it back to him because he's pretty pricey and a little swamped these days.So I had Glenn fix the caps and sold it.
I DO regret selling that red 2203 that I had for about a year. I found a pic with it yesterday and it was a sad moment.I was running both marshalls in stereo then, but that always created noise problems. I don't think i'll try that anytime soon.If you're doing that, Trace always told me to try a "Lehle" pedal for running two amps. It will eliminate noise and loops from splitting to two amps.
Later on!

Edge, Whenever you need a bias just let me know. If you ever want to email me you can reach me at:
mholleran3@stny.rr.com
If you email me, I will get you my cell number.
If you ever do want to run 2 rigs in stereo again, Radial engineering makes an ABY switch with that will eliminate the noise issues just like the Lehle for a lot cheaper ($69). The Lehle stuff is really good though. I don't run my stuff in stereo. Too much work, LOL! Plus I kinda think things sound tighter with only 1 amp thru 2 cabs. I am all about tight gain these days.

I hear ya JC, You always had a tight sound! And a tight accurate technique as well.
Dude I'm getting old or just going through a phase but I sold everything I was using. All the Schecters ,EMG 81s and 707s, all the seven strings the PODxt...anything modern or new metal...I was just like to heck with it! It seemed like everytime I listened to OCTANE on sirius everyone's tone sounds the same now.
So I decided to go back to the tones, players and gear that first influenced me when I was like a teenager.. I got an 800 ish amp back(Splawn) and pieced together two custom strats with duncan customs in the bridge as my main axes.
I've been getting into the old players I used to love: remember Gary Moore in the metal days? I had "After the war" and a whole bunch of compilations of his stuff and loved his tones and technique.I was talking bout him one night, and later dreamt that night that I bought an old hamer with a floyd rose on it! WTF? I never would have....anyways I search youtube the next day for some live footage and what is Gary playing? You guessed it! A Hamer with a Floyd. Freaky!
I was doing some old TNT riffs at soundcheck and trippin Goody out.I always loved Ronni Le tekro's tone and machine gun muting style.i cranked up the opening riff to 10,000 Lovers and it sounded righteous thru the Splawn. You know what, I looked up some live TNT and noticed he plays custom strats with floyds! And upon further google searches found out he only uses Duncan Customs!
Some freaky coincidences! I think its cool though, discovering some New/Old music. After looking up the Slawn site, I had to dig out some old VH!
Talk to you soon JC!

Edge, I hear ya'. While I still have the huge pedalboard (inspired by you I might add) I have tried to go the opposite of the mushy, overly bassy Nu-Metal sound. I had 2 Bogners before the Splawn and the VHT and they were heavy sounding, but not defined enough for me. I always loved your sound with the Marshalls. You don't use as much gain as I do, but it works very well for your style.
I bet Goody did flip over the TNT riffs. He & I used to love those guys. Ronnie is an incredible player and his tone was always incredible. I think he always used modded Marshalls.
The Duncan Custom is a great pickup for sure. I have been getting into Dimarzio's lately though. I have a Gibson LP Baritone with a Dimarzio D-Sonic in the bridge and I love it. Very balanced and clear sounding. I was never into EMG's. They always sounded sterile to me.
Someday I would love to have an old JCM 800 for the right price. I would just run a clean boost in front.
Anytime you feel like jamming or just hanging out you are more than welcome to head up to my place. I would love to pick up some techniques from you. You are an awesome player!
Talk to you soon.
-JC
