Well, I have had my older pro mod with JJ's for awhile now and have been using the high input (gear 2) od1 for the most part. Its been sounding good but it sounds kinda muddy when you roll your volume back. I had given up on gear 1(Low input) then I discovered the solo boost.I didnt think I needed it but it really seems to change the sound just a bit! Anyone notice this? It seems more gain and a more "in your face" midrange.
Here are my settings I've been using over the weekend: Presence 5 ,Bass 7.5 ,Mid 3, Treble 4.5, Solo about 3,volume just lower than solo and gain 10 (dimed!) OD1 Gear 1. It rips through my two marshall bottoms with UK made greenbacks. I'm using a variety of pickups, hot rails,GFS chrunchy PAF and duncan custom and they all sound great with this setup! There just seems to be more breakup and balls with the solo kicked on. Its heavy when I palm mute but still articulate, and cleans up really nice.
I'm glad I gave 1st gear a second chance, for the first time in awhile ,I had guitar players coming up to me and asking me about my sound all weekend!
Viva la Splawn!

I don't know about the 2 input version but on mine the solo boost definitely changes the tone a bit. Just as edgebsl described, it pronounces the mids and adds a certain bite to it. I have been using it alot more lately. I am almost thinking about leaving it on all the time and balancing the vol/solo. fwiw, I use Gear 2, OD2 most of the time. The solo boost sounds mean as hell with those settings.

When you have the solo boost on you can hear things change as you alter the original volume controls...I can play around with both volumes and find kind of a "sweet spot". Even though its not a gain stage..its clearly boosting more than just overall volume. I guess a by-product of having something like that in the path.
I also have the od1/od2 switch which seems to compress the lows and accents the middle highs a bit.I like OD2 for some leads but not so much chunking rythyms becasue I love that big open bottom.
I am going to try and make some board recordings in the next week or two and I will post some clips and see what you guys think. I think its sounding pretty good...way happier than I have been with anything else.

definetly changes it....it's like runnin' OD2 with the same gain only louder...I use OD2 for just about everything on gear 1, unless I'm l ayin' back a bit...

The solo boost also effects the clean channel tone a little. It makes it a little brighter, not a ton, but some.

Solo boost to me sounds like it pumps up the low end, and volume, but backs down some of the gain, making it much clearer and more focused to my ears. I like to play with the solo boost engaged all the time, making the solo boost function useless!!! LOL

It adds a punch to the low end that almost makes your rib cage collapse, much fun!!!

Hey Edge, Did you get to check out Brian's PM with the Tung Sol 6550's? How did you like 'em compared to the JJ KT88's?

Well, I would say they definitely sound a bit better to my ears. They have a less "bloaty" low end and like he said, more punchy. Maybe a bit better midrange curve too.More open and pleasing. It's not a tremendous night and day difference but there's definetely a noticeable difference there.
Actually the biggest difference between the two amps was his is the 3 gear model and I have the two input model. Mine has more like gear 2 and 3 on it! Actually if you wanted to get technical I would say mine is kinda like having gear 1 1/2 and gear 2 1/2 ! lol So it turns out I'm more of a gain freak than I thought!
I really liked his amp on gear 2 od1 dimed. I think it sounds a little bit better than mine. I will definitely try out the 6550's in mine sometime soon.
A big thanks to Brian for bringing out his amp! I am envious of the hot rod flames!
