Does anyone know what brand of preamp tubes Scott uses in his amps? Just curious because I didn't see any info about it on the Splawn site.

How many preamp tubes do the Splawns run? I have alot of different brands at home from trial and error on different heads. I have some Electro Harmonix, Shuguang C9's, JJ's, & Tung Sol reissues. Have you ever heard the Tung Sol 12AX7's? They are very nice sounding preamp tubes. I'll have to experiment when I get mine.

the new ones have 4, the previous ones have/had 3
never heard the tung sols
puttin' the EHs in there didn't make it a night and day difference though..don't expect it to be a 'new' amp when you try swapping them

I just got the newest version QR with extra preamp tube for the cleans...slapped a Tung-Sol (reissue) in V1 and V2...VERY happy with the results. Like Shreder75, I also liked the EH's in there, too. As he said...not night and day difference, more subtle...but nice. |

The Chinese tubes have nice gain to them but they are a bit on the buzzy side. Doesn't seem like there is much to improve on these amps. I just put in a spec order with Josh Sage for a Pro Stock so it won't be too long now!! Pretty fired up. |

anyone try the jj tesla ecc803s?? they say it is a newer design and has a bit more gain and bite to them. i am looking to put new pre amp tubes in(i think i have a bad one!)and wanted some opinions.

EH pre amp tubes have a little more edge and gain to them than the jj's. The jj's have a more musical full body to them. Some call this darker?  I am not sure why..  |

a friend of mine is really pushing me toward the tung sol 12ax7s.he has tried just about every tube known to man and he thinks these are the best ones he has ever used(he is the one that turned me onto the jjs when i re-tubed my triple rectifier) so i think i am going with those.
