I'm going to make this a brief positive "rant." While I think it's great that the Quick Rod has had a well-received introduction into the amp world, I'm baffled as to why the Pro Mod is not as highly regarded. Is there just not enough difference between the two tonally to substantiate the extra cost of the Pro Mod? This is a pretty great amp and I am just curious as to why there's all this fuss over the Quick Rod, but the Pro Mod seems to have been thrown to the wayside... Anyhoo, rock n roll--crank 'em if you got 'em.

Todd,
I had a quick rod for a brief two weeks. I sold it to another forum member. I think why the quick rod gets more attention is lets face it, the majority of people interested in these amps are people looking to obtain the VH brown sound and being the QR uses el34's which scott says does the brown thing a little closer it makes sense why. Plus it is a little less expensive so why pay more then you have to??? Now I have not played a pro mod and it probably is close enough to the QR sound wise that the average ear would not be able to tell the difference and probably if you replaced a QR owners amp with a PM without telling them they may not even notice. Mike Soldano stated that in general tubes don't make as much of a difference in sound as most people think. He says from one type of tube to another is ususally very subtle.. Go figure

I recently got a quick rod (QR) but used to use a splawn modded 100 watt plexi reissue with the kt88's and upgraded transformers (I'll call that PM). I would assume the modded Marshall sounds a lot like the pro mod so I can offer a comparison form that. This is only regarding the dirt channel because the modded Marshall didn't have that option.
QR - sounds better at lower volumes. You really had to crank the PM to get it to sing, but once you got it there, look out. PM had almost uncontrollable dynamics, QR has better than average dynamics and is easily controlled. QR has a bit of a Dokken era Lynch vibe, PM sounded a little more open like some of the better zep stuff. The gain boost on the PM was a little more intense than the QR, not really sure why.
Bottom line they both sound really good, totally Marshally, just a little different. More dynamics and low end on the PM. QR has more of a midrange thing going. Personally, I would like one of each.

Do you think that the newer PM's have more controllable dynamics with the Heyboer transformers and separate eq's? I am really having trouble deciding which one to get. I like a more modern sound like the PM but there seems to be so much more of a better vibe w/ the QR that I feellike I'd be missing some magic or something. My only problem with it is that I don't like Dokken or 80's tones and that's mostly what I see playing them. HELP!!!! I'm losing it.

ag you said that: You really had to crank the PM to get it to sing, but once you got it there, look out. So to get a good tone or chunk the volume has to be turned up is that it? From shredders demo the QR plays chunky and OD as hell at low bedroom levels, will I not get that with the PM model?
