I've rolled many tubes in all 4 positions in my street rod and have settled on(for now); v1-philips ecg 5751, v2-early 60's amperex ecc83, v3-tesla ecc83, v4- jj ecc803s. Power tubes are ruby el34b-str. Its fun to fine tune the preamp, its subtle but to my ear the nos have better clarity and definition than the gainy chinese tubes that came stock in the amp. As we know v2 is the main input position and will have the most effect on the tonal signature. I switch between amperex,(balanced bass, mid and clear top end) and nos mullard ecc83 (warmer, thick mids, rolled off highs). Depends on what guitar I'm using: strat or tele= mullard, les paul or super strat with humbuckers= amperex. The only thing I wish was better is the clean channel. The 5751 gives a little more headroom. And its better with single coils. Would love to hear others experience with this.

Hey there,
Thanks for your tube review lonestar!
I really like the Phillips 5751 but I tend to put it in the PI. Admittedly I'm not a huge NOS consumer though. Just don't have the funds to support it.

I too, have rolled every tube known to man through my QR. In the end I liked the stock Chinese the best. In my JCM 800 the NOS rule though

I like the chinese tubes in v3 and sometimes v4. Have not tried the new production mullard in v1 yet. Does it break up less? I may try a longplate rca 12ax7 for v1, others have liked it. As for power tubes, I have only used the stock sino/ruby el34b-str. Anyone want to chime in on running other power tubes in their SR and describe the differences?

I don’t get any breakup with the New Mullard, which is what I wanted. It’s big, thick, chimy and round sounding all at once if that makes any sense?

I've used Mullard EL34s and more recently SED Winged C EL34s. Will probably try something completely different next time as the =C= are getting ridiculous in cost, but otherwise super happy with them. For preamp tubes, I've been pretty stuck on JJ 12AX7s all the way through and a Phillips JAN 5751 in the P.I. I've done lots of tube rolling with Chinese, Groove Tubes, Tung Sol and others and FOR ME, the JJ's work best. That said, I've done a lot of tube rolling in my Mesa Rectoverb head lately and I have a whole mix of stuff going on in there right now. I purposely went with what I though sounded best and tried to remove all bias I may have on preamp tubes. I think I ended up with something like V1-Chinese, V2-GT, V3-JJ, V4-Chinese, V5-JJ (V5 is loop driver). Lastly, if it helps, when you are going to do some serious tube rolling get a glove or similar. Take the back panel off the amp and spin it around so amp it is facing away. You can leave the amp on while you swap preamp tubes. You won't hurt the amp and you won't get electrocuted. Tubes will be hot though obviously. For the PI, I would put the amp on standby or turn off. YMMV I'm still relatively new to this game as I've only been playing guitar, as a hobby, for about 10 years now. I went straight from a budget Valveking 112 to a Splawn QR

Thank you for your replies, I did try a 5751 in the phase inverter. In my street rod it sounded ok. It seemed to reduce the overall volume a bit and took away some touch response. I like the response better with a 12ax7 in the PI. I think with the quickrod, being a 100 watt vs the 40 watts in the SR and having a higher plate voltage, the 5751 works better for that amp in the PI. I'm going to try a GE 5751 in v3 next. My SR has a ton of gain and sometimes I wish it had a little less compression. V3 is for the gain channel so it may help. I might try JJ e34l power tubes next time just for something different. I've only used the chinese/ruby/TAD el34b's.
