So I just received a quick rod today from a seller on reverb. I plug in and start playing when I notice one of the power tubes start burning bright red before I can do anything I start hearing the sound of electricity coming through my amplifier and noticed what looked like an electric storm inside the said tube that was burning red.I proceed to throw the amp on standby and cut the power. Was my amp red plating or do you think there is a more serious problem? I've owned a number of tube amps before and have never experienced this issue. Luckily I am fully protected through reverb however I got it for such a great price that I am hesitant to send it back. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

My guess is that the amp needs a set of tubes and a bias. What you’re describing sounds like a faulty tube red-plating. There’s no way to really know for sure if there is something else going on. I’d be willing to bet if you took it to a tech, the first thing he would do is put new tubes in and bias....if the problem persists, then you’ll have to dig deeper. A set of Sino tunes from tube depot will run about $60. And an hour of your time to bias them.

The exact same thing happened to me and it was a faulty new tube i put in. So bought another set of tubes and problem solved.

Sorry this happened.
If it were my amp I'd take a look at the screen grid resister on the socket where that happened. If there are any burn marks or the like there or anywhere - putting new tubes in will cause that tube to redplate too and possibly cause even more damage. YMMV and good luck mang, and welcome to splanfans. Can you do a NAD thread?
PS: The inside of an amplifier can shock you even if it is turned off so I would probably take it to a tech as mentioned.
