Hello all, I’ve had my Quickrod now for long enough and haven’t fallen out of love with it so I decided to start thinking about a matching cab.
Right now I’m playing through a Marshall 1960a with greenbacks (2- 75hz, 2-55hz) and it sounds great. I was going to buy a new unloaded splawn 4x12 and put my greenbacks in it, but one came up used for sale. And with the price break plus not having to wait for one to be built I decided to pull the trigger on it.
It’s loaded with smallblocks so it’ll be interesting to hear the difference between the two cabs. I’ll share my experience with the two cabs after it’s here with anyone who’s interested!

Curious to hear what you say comparing greenies to small blocks.

Small blocks are greenback clones. Made by Eminence and rated at 55w. Shouldn’t be much of a difference at all....but I’ve never done a side by side comparison myself.
Keep in mind that you’ll be doing a comparison of a 4x12 vs a 2x12 so it’s not an apples to apples comparison.

Yeah I’ve heard they are greenback type speakers, but I’ve got to think they’ll have their own characteristics and being 55watt has to affect their sound a bit I’d think? Also my 1960a is also a 4x12 so while they are two different cabs, they will both be 4x12 cabinets.
Anyways I’m excited to see how much of a difference there is. It will be tough for the small blocks to replace the Greenbacks as I’ve grown quite fond of the Celestions.

I’m curious as to your findings as well. Post up a video comparison!!!!!

I think the small blocks will be smoother on top. Greenies will have more bite and definition.

^ That's what I'm going to guess as well. Maybe less hairy and a tad more modern. Good luck! Is it white? I wonder too what differences you can explain to us and also how broken in the Small Blocks might be. So are going to have 2 cabs? Another idea would be to but two greenies in the Splawn cab in a X pattern and sell the Marshall cab as upgraded or keep it as back up.

It’s a straight cab with the natural grille cloth. I have intentions to change my head shell in the future to something a little more 800 like. The white Plexi is cool, but I’m just kind of a fan of the traditional JCM look. So this cab will match that great. I also have a Marshall JCM 900 MkIII, that will go back on the Marshall cab now. That was my first rig and I don’t think I’ll ever sell it just because I won’t get out of it what it’s worth to me. But I have plenty to play around with now for sure. I’ll have to record a couple clips of each cab. I need a good room mic but I know nothing about them, I’ve always just used the ole SM57.

Cab showed up yesterday and my first impression is wow. There is a rather noticeable difference between the two cabs.
I would describe the Smallblocks as being punchier, a full bottom end with crisp highs and mids. They sound fantastic in the room. While the Greenbacks sound a little more articulate with a more defined bottom end.. First impressions are maybe the Greenbacks would cut through a mix with a bass better but on the other hand the Smallblocks sound incredible. They are definitely two different speakers.
I’m going to try to get some clips up, just trying to figure how to accurately capture the difference. I’m not sure an SM57 is going to be the best option.

Can’t wait to hear what you’ve got! If all you have is an Sm57, just roll with it.

Congrats. Would love to hear more differences. Its not every day you can talk to someone about Small Blocks. So to clarify, you got a used Splawn cab right - that has Small Blocks in it already. So we can assume they are broken in. SM57 should be grand. I have one but I'm just a hack. Could be a lot worse right?

Thanks!
Right now I’m just enjoying them and playing with them, I’ll get some clips up soon though. I’m finding myself turning the bass down and the presence up from where I had it set for the greenies.
Also yes I bought it used, and it’s kind of beat up, nothing terrible just your typical use dings so I’m going to assume they are pretty well broken in. Also the cab is sitting directly on carpet with no casters while my Marshall cab has casters holding it up off the carpet. I guess that could be contributing to the bassier sound I’m getting?

Yeah, nothing wrong with an SM57.... industry standard for good reason.

Just wanted to pop in and say sorry I’ve been absent from this thread. One of my properties that I rent out caught on fire late last week. I’ve been pretty tied up handling that situation and haven’t had a lot of guitar time. (Make sure your cigarettes are fully put out before you walk away ladies and gents.)
Briman, My head is White Plexi and cab is black with natural grill. But I’m changing headshell to black JCM style soon.
I’ll be back soon guys! And seriously, put your cigarettes out guys.
