I own both a QR and. A Nitro and they are definitely different animals. For pure versatility, you cannot go wrong with the QR. If you have a ‘Fully Loaded’ QR then 3rd Gear, OD-2 with the mid cut engaged on the ‘New’ voicing is as close to the Nitro vibe as possible. I really like having both. Which one is my favorite depends on which day you ask. But after having a pair of Mesa Mark IIIs, a Dual Rec, a Bogner XTC, a Bogner Helios and a Bray 4550, I will say with zero hesitation that the Splawn beats them all hands down, no comparison. I’ve never owned a Friedman, but the clips online that I have heard have that nice articulation and string separation that I love about my Splawn’s - even as you crank the gain, there is a ‘clarity’ to the amps that the Mesa’s just cannot produce. Bogner stuff is top tier, no doubt. But to my ears, there was always something ‘solid-state-y’ about the gain. Kind of ‘practice amp fizz’ at loud levels. Where the Splawn just sounds so much more organic and ‘tubey’ by comparison.

I ended up getting both. My QR is a 2011 and my Nitro is a 2009. I cant get the mods upgraded on them due to the transformers being different than the ones with the mods. I'm thinking of sending my QR to Jens Kruse for some mods after hearing a demo of a pro stock he worked on. Although since adding a MXR 10 band EQ to my board I can get pretty much my nitro tone on my quick rod.

Before having any mods done to your amp, I strongly suggest rolling various tubes through the head as well as seeing how she reacts with different speakers. No such thing as right or wrong, good or bad. Purely a matter of taste. I have found significant difference in tone between the Chinese EL34s that Scott typically sources and JJ E34-L (noticably more low end and ‘darker’ overall tone) or JJ EL34-II (slightly boosted lows but more balanced mids and glassy highs). For preamp tubes, EH tend to have higher gain while Genalex tend to sound warmer. Point is, you can have a lot of fun and achieve noticable difference in tone just rolling tubes. And don’t get me started on speakers! I played ‘speaker go round’ last year and the difference in tone from one speaker to the next is remarkable. For what I’m doing, I absolutely love the Made in UK G12-M 20 watt Greenbacks (G12EVH are rumored to be the identical speaker with the EVH label on the magnet cover.)
