Hey guys, been away a while, I’m using my left over Marshall 1960 B vintage stereo cab with vintage 30’s and my friend and I get like giddy school girls when we wind up my quick rod. But it gets better than this?
How can this be possible? So I hear and I read that there is another level above this with a matched Splawn loaded cab.
br] My 1979 Floyd equipped Strat has a set of sinner Strat pickups with bottom plates from Bare Knuckle of England. This guitar through the QR is like the voice of god. The bridge pu is a true single coil alnico that puts out like 22k ohms and the neck, middle like 14.5! They go from piano chime to flame thrower napalm, I have the dream rig now, I can drive right from the guitar - holy sh!t - it’s hair raising! but wait - a better sounding cab?
Please calling all splawn gurus please enlighten me,
What is the best sounding Splawn cab with what Splawn speakers for the Quick Rod? Best regards, rodburner

I like creambacks and greenbacks in x pattern the best. Sound incredible. Eminence governors and man o wars in x pattern are great also but creamier and greenies the best.

Briman, thank you for the reply - I’m going to order a cab from Splawn unless I luck into a deal on a used one.
Are the cream backs and green backs, Emminance speakers, Celestians or who’s?
So creamback is that what Splawn calls the small block?
What does Splawn call the greenbacks?
What would I order from Splawn to get what you suggested?

Creambacks and greenbacks are celestin speakers. Governors and man o wars are eminence. Smallblock and big locks are splawn speakers which I think are made by eminence but hopefully someone else on here can confirm that.
You can order your cab with greenbacks and creambacks from splawn. I think he also still sells smallblocks and big locks but again not sure.
I think small locks are trying to emulate greenbacks and bigblocks creambacks.

Vintage 30's sound harsh with splawn. Too bright. You will be blown away when you try any of the ones I mentioned.

I'd go so far as to say V30's sound harsh with every amp I've tried them in (various Peaveys and a Blackstar). Can't stand V30's, in your face icepick in the ears (non) tone.
But... YMMV as always IMHO etc... etc...
I have a (stock) Creamback 65 in my Street Rod and I use an extension cab with a Greenback in it.

I thought the big blocks were supposed to be closer to the G12H30. There's a video of Scott playing a Street Rod with a big block, sounds awesome! Unfortunately he doesn't sell them any more.
From what I understand the small blocks are made by Eminence but the jury is out on which Eminence they're based on... heard good things about the Wizard and Governer... but haven't tried them

Not sure about the bigblocks emulating creambacks or greenback with higher wattage.

I haven`t used V30s by themselves in a long time but I`ve got a V30 mixed with a Creamback H75 in my Splawn 2x12 and it sounds glorious with my EL34 Super Sport head. And FWIW I've got Creamback H75s on the bottom and Creamback M65s up top in my Splawn 4x12 with my other EL34 Super Sport head and it sounds pretty bitchin' as well

I have greenbacks and the mojotone watchtowers x'd in my 4x12's great mix. The mojo's have a g12c sticker on the magnet, made by celestion for mojotone. got a quad of these for less than 350.00 with shipping from reverb.. Great sounding speaker.

Small blocks are emulating Greenbacks but at 55w instead of the 25w that the Celestion Greenies are. They are made by Eminence. I have them in two 2x12 cabs both paired with a Celestion G12t-75. That’s an incredible combination. And iirc they (Small Blocks) are $95/each....cant beat that with a stick!!

Small Blocks are what I would do too. I have them in my Splawn 212.
PS: V30s are great with some amps just not Splawns. Something about mid frequencies clashing. They are great in my Mesa Slant Trad under the Rectoverb but never with my Splawn.

Ive just played a serious game of speaker-go-round. Thank Gawd for Reverb.com! I have really been able to break even! My Splawn straight front 4x12 came loaded with 65 watt creambacks and it never dawned on me to change them - until now. FWIW, I previously had a Bogner straight front 4x12 loaded with V-30s and the improvement in tone with the 65 watt Creamback cab was significant. As a young guitarist in so-cal in the late 80s, I thought V-30s were the be all and all speaker. Ah, to be young and gullible again... But I digress.
Long story short, I now have a Splawn straight front loaded with G12EVH - which I understand are simply the Made in England G12M Greenbacks. I also loaded my other Splawn 4x12 with a quad of Mojotone Watchtowers which are the re-labeled Celestion G12-C that were created by Celestion for Marshall’s Jimi Hendrix series and the Vintage Modern series. The first run of these (for the Hendrix series) all came from the UK factory and the later run that went in the VM series are made at Celestion’s overseas plant. But at $80 bucks a speaker they just cannot be beat. Definitely a touch more midrange and tighter low end where the G12EVH sounds a bit more ‘even’ across the tonal spectrum - no real ‘pushed’ frequency range - and also have a ‘softer’ feel than the Watchtower / G12C. I will say, my Watchtowers need some additional breaking in and will likely continue to sound better and better. I sourced my EVH quad on Reverb from a seller that had put several hours through them in his EVH cab, so they were good to go. My QR sounds absolutely killer through the G12EVH and my Nitro sounds a bit better through the G12C.
I cannot possibly be happier with the sound of these speakers as compared to the 65 watt creambacks. The EVH and G12c are warmer, rounder, softer, and add a degree of speaker compression that is hard to duplicate with significantly higher wattage, tighter speakers. Speaker compression is more akin to they type of sag that you feel when you play a Drop B+ amp. It’s not at all like adding any gain or sizzle through the front end of the amp. I just get so much more ‘feel’ through my amps. Everything feels easier to play. Of course, this is all SO personal and depends on your guitar, pickups, amp settings and playing style, not to mention your own ears!
If you are on an unlimited budget, order a pair of the Celestion 55 hz Heritage greenbacks and a pair of the 75 hz and X them in your 4x12. At $200 each, it will set you back a bit, but I have singles of those in my ported 2x12 and with my Rockstah, it sounds more like Edward than Edward! Ill never go back to higher wattage speakers.

Awesome!! I looked at the EVH’s too but they were a little too pricy for me at the time. I ended up going with Small Blocks, which I have absolutely zero regrets buying...I love them. I have never heard of the mojotone speakers but I obviously am aware of the company, and have ordered small items from them a couple of times. Glad you found a setup that blows you away...,it’s an amazing thing!! Congrats
