I recently put a reissue Mullard 12ax7 in my V1 slot (clean channel). I love the overall tone of it but I’m beginning to think it’s too damn powerful! Any one have any experience with a 5751 or other lower gain variant in V1. I’m looking to soften the attack some.

I think you will like it. Granted mine is NOS. I like to describe them as having slightly less gain and maybe slightly less musical or round - but it makes up for all of that in its clarity. I think that is why they are so popular in V1s and PIs. Looking forward to your take. Because it is a JJ, maybe it will be plenty round and musical lol.

Last time I jammed with the guys I felt like the clean channel had way too much attack. It was crystal clear and not gainy at all but like you described, it was lacking a roundness or softness I was looking for. I’ll pop it in this weekend and check it out.

I agree the clean channel is too clean. That's an area the QR needs improved upon...

I love the clean channel on both my Quick Rods. Very full sounding and can get chimy if you want with tweaking.

I don’t feel that it is too clean...but it is very powerful. I was wanting it to be just a touch softer in its attack. And yeah, I still haven’t popped in that 5751. Lol I’ve been too busy working on my board.

Don’t know about using the 5751 in the Splawn, but I have a heavily modded Metropoulos Plexi that always sounded absolutely killer, but was VERY prone to front-end squeal and feedback. You could roll the gain back, but the tone would lose some of the ‘glassy sparkle’ that I really loved about it. I swapped all 3 12AX7s for JJ 5751s and absolutely could not be happier. Completely tamed the squeal / feedback problem and allowed me to send enough signal through the gain stages that the amp still has all the glassy sparkle. I may try one on the clean channel of the Splawn. They are definitely softer and warmer than your typical 12AX7, but not at all dull or ‘blanketed’ sounding like some have reported online. FWIW, I sprung for the JJ Gold Pin matched trio. It was pricey, but they are dead quiet and sound great.

I had my first blown JJ today. It was actually in V4 (FX send/return) of my Rectoverb. Funny because it is similar to other stories we have been sharing about when in doubt - strip it all down. This was one of those deals where things in my FX Loop (delay - EQ - reverb) started to sound funky. It would start to 'wobble' and would only stop if I switched off standby. I started with the Mix Knob. Then guitar straight in. Then pretty much narrowed it down to the FX loop. Then took it one pedal at a time. Then made a decision that it was my EQ pedal so I removed it. This was about a week ago or so. DID NOT THINK to look or swap the FX tube. Everything was fine though until a few days ago when all of the sudden I got no sound out of the amp. Just a slight distorted tone when cranked up on the gain channel. Enough to let me know the signal was in there. It was actually very indicative of blown power tubes. So I started swapping power tubes around (both 6L6 and EL34s) along with V1 and PI. The reason I didn't see V4 FX send/return tube is because it is kind of behind the OT and up in front of amp where it is darker. I looked up the tube layout in the owners manual to remind myself and as soon as I pulled V4 I realized what my problem was all along. LOL So - if you get a preamp tube like this it means it has a blown getter. There is a very cool scientific reason behind why it does this. When they make tubes they put a bit of Barium in the mix during the vacuum process. What that does is it coats the inside of the glass at the top and gives it that silver look. If the the tube ever becomes compromised, oxygen will rush in. When that happens, the oxygen interacts with the Barium Sulfate on the glass and it turns it white like that. Cool Story Bro.

Glad it was a simple fix. I think, at least for me I tend to not want to do the strip all the pedals away thing sometimes. Partly due to laziness and partly because it can be a long and time consuming process. Especially if you have a large and somewhat complicated board....like mine. Lol
