Hello,
Just joined the forum after lurking for a bit. I'm the proud owner of a 2011 Quickrod amongst several other amps.
I have a question about the mid-cut option. For those that have it do you like it? Does anybody know what frequency's it cuts? I do like mids but a little cut might give it the ability to cover even more styles of music.
Thank you in advance!

Hi! Welcome aboard. I have the mid cut and tbh, I never use it. I don’t know what specific frequency it cuts. Scott had told me that cutting the mids brings the QR closer to how the Nitro is voiced. But you are right, for someone that is looking for more variety it’s a good option. The QR handles the hod rodded Marshall stuff while the Nitro gets into metal territory. Personally, I’m more of a modded Marshall guy.

The Splawn takes the cake for me. Really the ultimate hot rodded Marshall. I had a Friedman BE at the same time as the Splawn and simply couldn't justify the price tag. The QR does everything that a Friedman does at IMO stays closers to the Marshall sounds. I find the Friedman a touch dark. Its a great amp but not worth the coin.

At one point a while back I had a Friedman also. Even though I liked the amp I didn’t love it. I also have a small 20w Blackstar which I find a little dark. It sounds great for a low wattage amp but it doesn’t have the cut the QR has. Not by a long shot. Everyone that hears my Quickrod has the same reaction... “DUDE....WTF!!!”

Ive got a fully loaded 50 watt QR after having a 100 watt ‘pre mid cut / pre new/old’ QR. The amps are night and day different. My 100 watter (which I have since sold) was extremely stiff. Almost uncomfortably so. But once I got used to playing through it, my technique really improved and the amp sounded really good. Scott’s 50 watt units all run with lower plate voltage, so my new 50 watter is a ‘Drop B+’ unit with the mid cut and new/old switches. When I first got it, I loved the mid cut - much more warm and compressed, much easier ‘feeling’ amp to play. But lately I find that I really prefer the mids in the mix: makes it sound clearer, more vintage-y, more Marshall-y. I have also found that I am using quite a bit less gain than when the amp first arrived. I have toggled the new/old switch back and forth, but always seem to prefer the ‘new’ voicing. To my ears, the ‘old’ voicing becomes a bit ‘boxy’ in the mids for lack of a better word.
When I do cut the mids with the switch, I find I can dial them way up with the knob without overpowering the overall tone. And when I put the mids back in with the switch, I find I can roll quite a bit of mids out with the knob without making the sound too ‘scooped’ or empty sounding. The greatest part the new options is how noticably they affect voicing while still having very functional, usable tones. Especially when recording - do one rhythm track in the ‘old’ voicing with the mids in and another rhythm track in ‘new’ voicing with the mids cut and the tracks really stand out in the mix - your not just layering more of the same.
Should be receiving my 50 watt fully loaded Nitro this week. Cannot wait to play with the mid switch and new/old switch with the more modern gain structure of the Nitro. I sold my 100 watt Nitro to finance the new 50 watt Fully Loaded nitro and I have missed it. You can get real close to Nitro territory with a new QR in 3rd gear, OD II, New voicing, Mid cut - But the Nitro is still a different animal. All of my buddies have moved on to Kempers and Fractals and Line 6 modelers, but I refuse to let go of my heads and cabs.

Kempers and fractals are convenient but sound no where near as good as a good tube amp. Apples to oranges.
Congrats on your new QR! My QR never leaves the B+ setting. Always on.
