Hey Guys,
Might be asking too much, but was hoping some of you may have owned (or at least played) the 3-pre, early 4-pre (2007-2008) and latest version of QR? I'm familiar with the 3-pre and the early 4-pre, but haven't tried anything since. Am looking to get a read on what the last 10 years have done to the QR tone. Can it now reach the 3-pre tone & agression with the old/new option, or has the amp veered more modern and further away from the hot-rodded Marshall vibe? I know Scott has been trying hard to please customers from bedroom players to live giggers to studio cats. So I'm not sure what all this invited over the last 10 years into the QR tone.
Anything you guys can share, experienced insight or clips, I'd really like to hear...not much out there online showing comparisons.
Many thanks,
Sonic

I can’t speak to the earlier QR. I own a 2016 model and it screams. While it certainly can do more modern sounds, mine nails the 80’s tones if that’s how I dial it and it also nails the Cantrell tone and with the mid cut I can cop any tone coming out of the Nitro as well (close enough anyway.)

I owned a 2005 competition and a 2005 prostock. They were very stiff and mid focused. The prostock was insanely loud. The comp was a little better for bedroom volume even though it didn't have a loop volume either.
I now own a 2015 stock Quick Rod and a 2016 fully loaded Quick Rod and they are voiced a little less middy and don't feel as stiff. I think my 2016 has a tad more gain on tap. The new old switch brings it back to more of the 2007 sound and feel. I briefly owned a 2013 Quick Rod and it was identical sounding to my 2015.

If you're thinking of getting a newer Splawn, there is 2016 Quick Rod with B+ for sale on Kijiji in Calgary Canada for $1700 canadian which is roughly $1300-$1400 US.
I would be all over it if I didn't already have 2!!

I'm pretty sure that with the old switch engaged and the mid 'cut' switch DIS-engaged, you will find the early, aggressive tone you are describing.
