I played my Splawn Pro Stock today and compared it to my Friedman BE50.
When I did this a few months back, I immediately felt the Splawn was more compressed, the bass was too much, and it wasn’t as organic. The BE has bigger mids and a bit more raw roar.
I still feel this is the case, BUT, with some tweaking, the Splawn can get close enough to the BE50 at half the price.
I wonder if the New/Old switch will make the Splawn closer to the Friedman, meaning, make it thicker in the mids and highs in comparison, which may also make it sounds more aggressive?
Thoughts???

The “old” setting to my ears is more aggressive. But let me ask you this... If you own a QR AND a BE50, why are you trying to make them sound the same? They are two different amps. Sure they do similar things, but I’d suggest just enjoying them for what they each offer. If you’re looking to change an eq characteristic I’d suggest putting an eq pedal in the loop and tweak from there. The “mids” thing is pretty much what the Splawn does. It’s sort of it’s trademark. I for one like that in this amp. I’m sooo done with the scooped mids thing. A guitar is supposed to sit in the midrange of the eq spectrum.

I agree, different amps, but still Marshall flavor and hot-rodded. But in my comparison, they're not too far off and each offer something different in the OD tones, but the differences are of course there. I love both. Each does something the other doesn't that I'd like in one amp. I can get more cash back with the Friedman, and while I LOVE the amp, I was pleasantly surprised by the Splawn, as I had not played it in a while to appreciate how it compared to the BE50. The reason I'm asking the question about New/Old is I'm in a pinch (somewhat) financially and am thinking to offload the BE50. I too don't play with the mids scooped--not my thing at all, but if the New/Old and Mid-cut offers more shaping options, I"d like to add those to the Splawn. Cheers!

The old/new switch is fairly subtle. You, as the player will be able to notice but I’d bet nobody else would. The mid cut is a definite noticeable difference. I haven’t checked YouTube but I would think somebody would have posted a vid showing the difference. Personally, I prefer the mid cut off (normal QR sound). Maybe you could sell the BE-50 and add a BE-OD pedal to sort of get close to the Friedman sound through the Splawn?

I used a Boss SD-1 in front of my Quick Rod to compress signal going in. This eleminated the bass and boominess and gave it more of a marshall feel, cadence and attack.
