Hi Guys,
What have you found helps push the input on a Quickrod while not sacrificing the tone of the guitar (especially lower end) or coloring the natural tone of the amp too much? IIRC, at one time the OCD was pretty popular on the forum among Quickrod users. What about the TS808 or OD808, other?
The QR has plenty of gain on tap but sometimes it can be desirable to stay in a lower gear and hit the front end a bit harder with a good pedal. But many times some of the bottom end can be filtered off by the pedal. Or colored too severely (as can be the case with a TS9 for example). So I was hoping to get some input from you guys on the forum who've probably already experimented with various pedals and can hopefully save me some time in narrowing down what to try...
Thanks,
Sonic

Hey Sonic, I have used a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 and a Bad Monkey. I liked both of them for a while but noticed that they took a little color out of the Splawn tone and have not used any boost pedals for quite a while now. As you said, splawn has plenty of gain on tap. I will never use a boost again with my Splawns. But I only play hard rock and rock. I have also learned that the less gain you use, the bigger and meatier your tone will be. Eddie and Angus did not use a ton of gain.

This is why for rock tones it can sometimes be helpful to goose the input of the amp a bit rather than turn up the preamp more. But not if the pedal ends up altering the tone in the process.

Get a BB Preamp...you’ll thank me!!! I have mine set with the gain off (or maybe just a little bump), volume I think is set for a slight boost and for my tastes I bump the lows to 1:30-2:00 and the highs to 10:00-10:30 on the pedal. I have the BB Preamp Comp. it give you settings for no added compression, regular amount or the amount in the Scott Henderson version (more). Very versatile pedal.

I forgot to mention that i had the gain on the fulltone and bad monkey very very low and still took color away from "splawn" tone.

Thanks for the input so far. Yeah, I actually have a Bad Monkey as well and it does exactly as mentioned....even with the gain at zero it still imparts color. Does a nice job for a boost with some sweet harmonics but it takes away from the core tone just enough that it doesn't quite qualify as a transparent pedal IMO. Most pedals are like that, hard to find one that gives a boost but keeps the natural character of the amp. I'll do some research on the BB...

I use a little Mooer Yellow Comp compressor into the front of my Street Rod. It makes my smaller practice amps at home sound great, adds "oomph" etc...
With the Splawn it negatively impacts the tone. I tried having it on all the time at one band practice and at the end of practice I turned it off and the amp sounded quite a bit better.
Having said that for some extra sustain on lower gears I'll kick it in for solos, does that well, but it's not a "leave on all the time" kind of thing at all.
As I said in another thread sometimes we just have to take a step back and realize what we have sounds great... until the next GAS attack hits!

Red Llama set as clean boost. It doesn't even have an eq! It's just REALLY loud and won't cut any frequencies.

I’m absolutely loving my TC Spark Mini. Hands down the cleanest, most transparent boost I have ever used. Adds no distortion and zero tone coloring or filtering to the sound. Just adds boost and sustain.
