Guys,
Just wanted to throw this out there regarding pickups and get some other winning combos for pickups with the Splawn QR.
I've tried 4 bridge pickups with this amp and the JB seems like the clear winner. Hands down. Wondering what anyone else's experience is.
The JB just sounds absolutely huge, thick, chewy, percussive, it has a massive bark, it's tight and articulate. For solos it tracks immediately and sings and screams like a banshee after 3 Red Bulls.
Roll the volume down and it does exactly what you would want.
I cant imagine another pickup sounding better for my needs.
I have the JB split, and it sounds amazing split, juicy as heck, stratty tones galore with the volume rolled off a bit. It responds giving those intermediate dirt tones, to spanky clean tones, both while split and not split.
Ironically, the JB is known for having a midrange character, as is the Splawn. However together they are absolute perfection for my needs.
Incidentally, I do not find that the Splawn has any mid issue, something I've read on a few gear sites.
I'm running Gear 1, gain at 2 oclock, most other knobs at about 12, with treble at about 1 oclock. All through a V30 loaded Mesa 4x12 and using an Alder body, maple neck Charvel Pro Mod
I also run the amp loud to very loud. Using the FX loop, I have the front volume at 11 oclock, and the rear fx volume between 11 to 12 oclock.
JB vs RTM:
I've done several side by side comparisons between the JB and the RTM over the last few months. I've come to the conclusion that I greatly prefer the JB to it. The JB sounds more organic, and less clinical. The RTM has a bit more sizzle perhaps, but tends to sound cold in comparison to the JB, ie: less bark than the JB. Not to say the RTM is a cold sounding pickup, just in comparison to the JB. They both have a great bite, but the JB seems to have a better timbre to my ears at least.
The JB splits better in my opinion, stratty tones galore, The rtm again sounds a bit clinical and sterile here. I know we all hear things differently, but this is my experience.
Cheers,
Tom
