A few months ago I decided to replace the BKP Rebel Yell pickups that were in my Les Paul. They are great pickups but just had a bit too much high end for the QR. After some research and question asking on some forums I went with a set of Dimarzios. I got a Gravity Storm for the bridge and a Titan neck....the Gravity Storm reduced the treble response like I wanted but still, it was just "ok". The Titan wasn't working for me at all. I couldn't get a good clean sound. At least not the clean I was looking for. So after a crap load more research and a couple of phone calls with Dimarzio, I decided to return the pickups to Dimarzio and exchange for another set. (They were still inside the 30 day return window). This time I went with a more "classic" Les Paul setup. A Super Distortion in the bridge and a PAF 36th anniversary in the neck. Hopefully they will arrive to me by the middle of next week. After that I'm going to have them professionally installed. The PCB board in the Les Paul is coming out (I hate that thing...lol). And I'll have them install all top quality pots and caps etc. also I'll have the tone pots wired for coil split with push/pull pots. Can't wait to hear these pups through the Quickrod!! Talk about 80's tone....

Cool man. Quite the adventure. Can't wait to hear what you think after this next round of upgrades. What are you going to do with the Rebel Yells? I've got a Super D in my Strat

For now I think I may just hang on to them. I have another LP with Rebel Yell pups. My Strat has Fokin pups. Then my other guitars are either single coil (Tele) or p90 (LP Special) or already have good pickups. Who knows, maybe I'll end up selling them...

Do Dimarzio still make the Megadrive? Always had good luck with those back in the day.

Lol...they arrived. I decided to have them professionally installed. My Les Paul has the stupid PCB quick connect board... I dropped the guitar off yesterday. I told them to take the PCB out and replace with CTS and Seymour Duncan pots. The Tone controls will be push/pull for coil splitting. Capacitor added for treble bleed but otherwise wired 50's style. All for $85. I'll have it back next weekend. Update to follow.

I just got my LP back today. Super Distortion in he Bridge and PAF 36th Anny in the neck. WOW is really the only word that comes to mind. The SD is one powerful pickup let me tell you. It sounds incredible with the Quickrod. Sustain for about 5 hours! Lol It completely tamed the high end response I was getting with the Rebel Yells. The 36 sounds killer under gain for leads but I'll need to spend a little more time dialing in the cleans. It gets quite a bit of low end. The only issue I have is the new pots....the luthier called me the other night and said he didn't have the long shaft Duncans in stock and asked me if I wanted to use a standard CTS, which I did. The other option was to rout out the body to accommodate the short shaft and that, for me wasn't an option. So, when he finished it and called me to tell me it was done he immediately told me that the CTS had a terrible taper to them but he wanted me to check it out for myself....well he was right. Almost no usable taper until it's almost completely off. He told me to bring it back in, the week after next (he's on vacation) and he would order me a set of the Duncans and put them in for me. I I'll have to live with it the way it is for a couple of weeks...no biggie.
I've gotta say, it's taken me a while to make this amp really sound the way I needed it to. It really is a picky amp. It likes what it likes. But once you "get it" it's breathtaking. And just to put it out here...I have a set of Fokin Hot Breeze pups in my Strat. (HSS) They sound absolutely amazing too. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to upgrade at a very reasonable price. Ilya Fokin makes a great product and he deserves to have his name out there and be known for what he does. His website is in Russian so I had to use Google translator to navigate it but he does speak English so communicating through email was really easy.
