The recent thread by 054 about switching in and out of Drop B+ with or without using standby got me thinking.... Should we be switching the standby switch if we need to change the gear knob setting. Lately I've been in 3rd gear as my main tone...but there are times when I'd like to use 1st gear too. I've just been reaching over and switching the knob over to the first gear setting without flipping the standby. I don't hear any noises or anything that would lead me to believe that I shouldn't do that..... What is everyone else doing?

My opinion is this.
It will not hurt the gears or the amp. That is all preamp stuff.
B+ drop is the power side of the amp.
An amps magic (imo) is when the preamp meets the power amp in the Output Transformer (OT) and hits your speaker. Let the preamp be your friend.
Also - if you can switch something with your footswitch (Like a Gear or OD2) then you don't need to standby.

briman - I wouldn't worry about it. There are times when he is just too busy.
He said standby for B+ switch and I agree.
Just do it and rock on man.
(although if you forget or something your amp will not blow up. It has a special OT.)

GtJr,
Totally agree with Splawndude here.
I switch gears using the dial all the time. Never considered using the bypass. I too consider it simply a toggle of sorts for the preamp circuit. ( I could be wrong of course, just ask my wife, lmao). But I am willing to bet that it's designed to be used in the same manner as the Mid toggle and Old/New toggle, during what I would call, Live, on-the-fly tone changes. Like engaging a pedal in and out of the signal path with an audio switcher.
Rock On!!!
Cheers,
Tom

Splawndude's post, where he clarifies that it is part of the preamp....I hadn't thought of that. But it makes sense. If you can change gears with the footswitch it only stands to reason that using the front panel knob is basically doing the same thing. Thanks!!

That's why I dig my Nitro.....it's like having a continuously variable transmission! I'm pretty sure changing gears on the QR whilst it's switched on won't do it any harm though.

Yeah - it won't do any harm.
I just realized I didn't answer the question directly in my original post.
(PS: when I first saw the title of your thread GTR I was thinking you were changing your mind on something or changing musical tastes LOL )
