Do I still need a Quickrod?

If I buy a Street Rod, do I still need a Quickrod?

Here's my situation:

* 75% of gigs are classic rock. If I play the Quickrod for this gig I play Gear 1 OD1 with the gain around 9 o'clock.

* 25% of gigs are 80's metal, where I always use the Quickrod. Gear 1 OD1 and OD2, gain around 12 o'clock.

* I would like to have 1 amp for both of these gigs.

* Obviously I'm not a "high gain" person, I find that Gear 1 OD1 with gain around Noon on my Quickrod is as much gain as 95% of the 80's hair band players ever used (probably more). And it suits me perfectly.

* I always play my Quickrod on 1/2 power, through a 2x12 cabinet.

* I prefer a combo amp for simplicity, as long as the open back cabinet/speaker combo can still sound good playing 80's hair band stuff (all of which was played thru a 4x12 sealed cabinet).

So basically, if I buy a Street Rod will it do everything the Quickrod does (when used on 1/2 power mode)?

The SR will do everything you need. I have a QR and a SR. For me, the more Splawns the better, but the SR will do everything the QR does.

Hey man! There is plenty of volume available on the clean channel. Depending on your pickups, it can stay clean at loud levels. Seriously, the SR is all you need.

That is what people said about the QR. And they were wrong. There is NO volume available on my QR on the clean channel, because I usually run my gain around 9 o'clock, and I still need a LOUD clean channel, which the QR simply will not do without cranking up the gain on the OD channel.

Does the SR share a gain with the clean channel? Bascially, I want to know if the Gain knob on the SR has ANY effect on the Clean channel, particularly if the Gain knob being low will cause low volume on the Clean channel.

I think you gotta boost the gain on your clean channel. I usually run mine up around 2 o'clock and I've got plenty of volume and actually back the volume off on the guitar a bit when in the clean channel. Doing this doesn't add gain as much as it warms things up a bit and makes more volume available IMHO (at least on my QR). Then you can add a bit more brightness, if desired, by increasing the treble and mids. You may wanna give that a try if you haven't already.

I've tried everything on the QR, and for some gigs I want the OD channel Gain knob at 9 o'clock, no more and no less.

Which makes the Clean channel useless and whisper quiet on stage.

So it sounds like I've confirmed that the SR has this same issue where the volume of the Clean channel is tied directly to the level of the Gain knob on the OD channel.

That's too bad, it's the one flaw on an otherwise perfect amp (QR) and it seems to have been fixed by Splawn on the newer QR's so I wonder why he reverted back to this screwy configuration on the SR?

Oh well, maybe he will make a newer version of the Street Rod eventually that will have a usable Clean channel. That sounds liek the exact amp I've been wanting.

Just curious... how much gain are you getting in the gain channel with the gain control set to 9 o'clock? I've never run mine any lower than noon, and usually have it set to around 3 o'clock (about 180° from where you have yours). Seems like you might be able to roll your guitar volume back a bit in the gain channel and have a pretty useable clean tone? Not criticizing... just curious. Also, you might wanna try a clean boost for use with the clean channel for that extra volume you're looking for. Just a thought.

I currently roll the guitar volume back for a lousy, but passable clean tone because I consider my QR to be a 1 channel amp. Thats why I was interested in the SR, I was hoping it was a true 2 channel amp.


I tried using my clean boost on the clean channel but to get the amount of boost in volume I need it just clips the front end of the amp.

With the gain around 9:00 and humbuckers I get a classic rock/bluesy lower to mid gain sound. Think Free/Bad Co/early Aerosmith sort of rhythm tone. I want good note definition in my overdriven sound, like a unmodded plexi run loud, but at club gig volumes.

I don't get it. I have used the QR for all kinds of stuff; the blues tone the hardest to dial in, but done. When I got mine, it had Tung Sol 12ax7s, which were not quite what I was looking for. V1 is the preamp for the clean, but I found that replacing it with the Mullard reissue (don't know why, but that was the tube I liked) gave a lot more body to the clean channel and some additional "crunch" to the OD channel. I tried a bunch of others, even some NOS (too strong!)but it wasn't really any better. A crappy tube in V1 really limits the amp.

What speakers and pickups are you using? A mega output ceramic is not gonna clean up very well on anything unless you got the guitar vol knob. on 2 or 3. For classic sounds, can't beat an Alnico II pickup ~ 8k

I play a Strat, Les Paul and PRS CU22, with Rio Grandes, Antiquities and JB & Jazz pickups.

My main issue is that I'd like a true usable channel switching amp that can go from real clean to dirty with a footswitch. The loss of volume on the clean channel (with the gain set low on the OD channel) is my one and ONLY complaint about the QR.

Ok, I just spent more time with the SR again....MY SR does NOT share the gain knob. In fact, to be sure, I turned the gain OFF. My clean still was loud and powerful. The overdrive channel's gain knob has no effect on my clean.
