The gear knob on the front panel doesn't seem to do anything. Using the footswitch I can apparently select different modes. Does the gear knob only work with the footswitch or should it do something when I select different gears?

The gear knob only works with the footswitch, unless you have a newer version comp which has a 3 position knob.
If you have the older version then one position let's you switch between 1st and 2nd gear, and the other position between 3rd and 2nd gear. When the footswitch mode switch is lit up in blue you're either on 1st or 3rd gear, when it's not lit up you're on 2nd gear.

What Loose said. That's the config have. And if you were lucky like me, you'd have a 1st-and-a-half gear because my amp changes when I flip between the two 2nd gears. I have a 2nd gear low and a 2nd gear high - no matter what Scott or Ayton or Loose or H says  So I have a question for you 3 position knob Comp owners. What does the 1st footswitch do? |

It does exactly the same swithing, except you can select gear 2 on the amp if you don't have the footswitch connected (I think for us it either defaults to gear 1 or 3). |

Yep. That gives us three position folk four ways to get to 2nd Gear:
Knob in 1st, mode light off
Knob in 2nd, mode light off
Knob in 2nd, mode light on
Knob in 3rd, mode light off
I wonder how many different tones that nut Jammer would imagine he could hear?!

Let's see, that's 3 knob settings, with a half gear at between 1 and 2, and 2 and 3. So that would be 5 gears. Mine would be a 5-speed. I think mine has a reverse gear also, because the more I practice the worse I seem to get. The Jammermatt model comes with a Vicadin PEZ dispenser in the head, so even though you're sucking worse every day, you simply do not care.
