I always use JJ ECC83s in all my amps.. my last amp, jtm45 I used the 803s, very decent. I thik Craggin tried a few other tubes and came right back to the JJ's.

Hacksaw is right...I ran a BUNCH of different preamp tubes to see what I liked best. Let me first say that any preamp tube that is inherently on the bright side will probably sound harsh. For the money...the JJ's are (IMO) the best tube out there...for a slight variation I really like the JJecc803, but it has a tad more noise to it. (Could just be the tube.) The 803 doesn't have as much gain to my ear, but is a VERY musical sounding tube...musical enough to make up for the lack of gain. The only other tubes I tried that were decent in the QR were:
1) RFT...not much headroom on the tube...keep that in mind. 2) Siemens...nice tube...lots of gain on tap. 3) GT 7025...I usually hate GT stuff...but this pre was actually pretty decent, a tad too bright for my taste though.
As you can see, the NOS tubes were nice in the amp...but for the money, the marginal difference in tone doesn't make it worth while IMO. If you have some NOS tubes laying around, cool...throw them in there and give it whirl...if not, you probably would be better off saving your money and staying with the JJ's. (I think you probably came to that conclusion based on your post.)
If you get the reissue Tung Sol's, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Currently, I'm running a mix of JJecc83s and the JJecc803s.

Preamp tubes don't seem to go bad very often but when I got my SLO I had background/motorboating noise when on the clean channel. I swapped V1 with ANY other 12ax7 and voil'a. Generally V1 is the most noticeable tonal change...sounded the same no matter what I used. Long story short go with new tubes but swap speakers to notice the most tonal change IMHO.
