'Cause I'm stickin' it to the man!!!
Actually, I keep the gain low for a few reasons:
1) I like to hear the tone of my entire signal chain including all the nuances of the guitar's tonewood and pickups.
2) It makes me try and play better.
3) I'm in a 2 guitar player band...the other guy plays with gobs of gain through his 5150. Playing less gain through my head decompresses my tone and actually makes me sound bigger, fuller, and the notes bloom better.
4) The amp has that "stop on a dime" characteristic to the "nth" degree with the gain backed off a tad.
...and I'm not running that much less gain than everyone else...1st or 2nd gear, OD1, gain around noon. I'd rather push the crap out of the power section and get my distortion that way.

I hate playing in 2 guitar player bands....too redundant to me...I know what you mean with the 5150 being too muddy/gain/noisy....you are right! you have to move in a different direction or you guys will sound like 'Catherine Wheel' a big wall of distorted guitars...(not that that is bad or anything...) but, if you have another guitar player bringing the major gain it's your DUTY to stomp him with the QuickRod goods...Don't let us down now, we are all counting on you!

Preach, brother Jim!!! I used to play my Road King against his 5150, as anyone who has ever played a Recto knows, they're all about the lower mids...which tend to get stepped on pretty bad by upper mid voiced amps like 5150's. I found out quickly to dial in mids, and dial back the gain..both helped me stand out quickly. With the QR, it's overkill...but it's just so much fun watching everyone scramble to adjust their EQ's when I come into the mix.
I noticed another revelation...I play pickups that are on the "hotter" side which probably makes me keep my gain knob somewhat in check.

I play all of leads in my band but having a second guitar is awesome. It fattens everytthing up and since your not being mixed most of the time by a pro soundman who can compensate for one guitar, its esential in a small club to have that extra ballz.
that being said I've done alot to educate my rhthm player on tone. He plays comnletely dry like me using a Soldano type setting with his Flextone. Lots of mid-range and bite. Its a nice wall of guitars out front even though I am twice as loud,, hahahahahaahaha.

I'm in a two guitar band as well...and while it can be a pain synching things up, I wouldn't want it any other way..like you said craig, fills it up alot nicer for one thing..and there's a whole nother world that's opened up to the two of you with harmonies and simultaneous guitar parts

True, once everyone figures out their slice of the EQ pie...the sound is nothing short of HUGE. I love the QuickRod...no other amp has ever staked such a large piece of EQ real estate, I can step on the guitar player or the bass player and teach them both an instant lesson. My bass player likes to sneak lots of mids into his sound...I usually respond in kind and dial in some extra bass on the QR...works like a champ.

Man i been trying to get him to drop the dough on a Splawn, but hes so stubborn and cheap with gear. When I get my new one I will let him use my old one.. and maybe even sell it to him if he wants it.
His one and only complaint is the clean channel. He likes that Roland JC clean which I hate.. and he plays all the clean stuff in the band not that theres much,,,
I do everything with my volume knob and control my pick attack.. to control my cleans etc like that.. he insists on playing full volume and just being able to stomp a switch to get clean. I'm old school,,

I had a Flextone 2-12 combo when I was touring with Superfreak. I needed something real small that had tons of great sounds. I mean it is what it is, but I would never use it for a rock/metal gig.

yeah, I had a vetta 2 combo...suited me great at home..but once we started to practice I was just gettin' swallowed..and since we pretty much do everything balls out, I didn't really need it...I only need one or two sounds anyway, and I'm set =)

Man i been trying to get him to drop the dough on a Splawn, but hes so stubborn and cheap with gear. Man I hear ya there..............I get so frustrated with 2 guys in my band (and we're a 4 piece), god forbid you ever need to cough up more than $5 apiece for some gear, you'd think you were asking for a lung. Our drummer is the worst about that, it makes me insane how cheap that guy is. Great drummer, but that guy will settle for ANYTHING if it means he can pinch a penny, even though he's clearing $150 in his pocket every gig. I've never met a musician so willing to obscure their own talent with crap gear. For me, I need to feel like I'm sounding my best, and if that means amp x or guitar y, I'll find a way to get it. Anyway, obviously a major peeve I have.
