That clearity is what I am looking for. The Splawn tone is awesome! I will probably stick with 1st and 2nd gear.

I got a chance to fart around with it a little last night at volume....keep in mind, it's a cruddy cab that I was playin' through..but I had the master at about 1 30 at one point (don't stand in front of it when doing this...I still can't hear...lol) and I put it in second gear with the gain around 2:00 and it friggin' killed!!! so I think that'll be my live setting...
I like third gear at lower volumes for home playing though..but at volume, it's a completely diffewrent animal =D

The amp definitely 'fills' in when the volume goes up...no matter what 'gear' you use. I have played a few 'plexi' panel Marshalls and owned a number of late 60's early 70s aluminum panel Marshalls (same circuit..) the amps SUCKED!!! (99% of em even when dimed sucked..) unless you modded them...they are WAY over rated as far as a STOCK amp goes...well, we all know what you get when you mod them or push the front end ...all this to say: Splawn's 1st gear is an EXCELLENT sounding MODDED early Marshall sound, MUCH quieter and easier to manage. You need an extra boost pedal or overdrive to bring it to where the guys on the Whitesnake DVD are bringing it...but it is definitely there in spades!

I can't stand marshalls...I've never played through one that sounded any good in any price range....that being said, I always liked the recorded sounds from hot rodded marshalls....which is what lead me to the QR =)

I LOVE the hot rodded Marshall sound (and Splawn gives it in 3 different dimensions) it's the 'Rectifier' ultra-scooped death metal sound that I don't particularly like....I kept trying though...(i've owned a single, dual and triple rectifier) not my bag....

I had a bunch of mesa gear....I used to use a 5150 as a power amp for the mesa triaxis..then I got rid of the 5150 and got the simul class 290...you know..their 'holy grail' of tone..sounded like microwaved piss...so I got a triple recto....and that sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard....
thus my severe hatred of the overhyped mesa recto series =)

I liked the mesa dual, it did one sound well. deep punch..Slow grind. yea... hate to have that much money tied up in one sound that I used twice a month.
I like the jtm45 ( i am biased cause I built it) ,, for those harmonially Rich slightly overdriven rythms, Bogner for those clapton cream era, and awesome clean channel, for the splawn.. in your face screaming window breaking, blow the people in the first 40 rows ears back.. I just love that..

I got my money back for the Triaxis/290 on ebay...amps are tricky...you have to pick the right amp that 'fits' the style of music you play...you can't run a Splawn amp in 3rd gear with the gain dimed and strum the guitar like an acoustic (I hear some people try to do this kind of stuff...) man, go get a Vox AC30 for that....( I wanna hold your haaaaand....) you got to bring the 'palm mute, attitude, pick squeeling, note pinching, string bending, confident GAME' when you get a Splawn amp.... THROOOOONG!!! it is a Modded Marshall (type)...people buy this amp thinking they have the GAME to play it....if you don't this amp will mercilessly expose your weaknesses (I know!)...when you get a Splawn you gotta MAN-UP! (should be their motto!).

I had a Single Rec Solo head not too long ago, and I liked it ok. But I was constantly tweaking knobs on it, and after awhile I realized it was because what I was really doing was trying to get it to lean towards a Marshall sort of tone, and it just doesn't really go there. So I got a Splawn Marshall 1987x, which knocked me out, and so I figured why not go full bore and get a QR. I couldn't be happier. I still haven't had the time to sell the 1987x yet, but I probably will.
I have a JCM800 2204 that I like quite a bit, but it depends alot more on front ends boosts and using a hotplate otherwise it's not very plug and play. I had a stock SLP plexi reissue and never did manage to get anything I wanted out of it. So I guess I'm mixed with Marshalls. To me, Splawns are Marshalls done right.
Back to the 1st gear thing.........I'm going to try it in a gig setting tomorrow night I think. I'm a little concerned about it being a little bitey, but then again in 2nd gear our sound guy always needs to cut the low end a bit at the board so 1st gear could work great. It's difficult to know without actually being at a gig, too much changes between home and stage. I've fooled myself too many times, carefully dialing in my tone at home only to arrive at gig soundcheck and have to stand there scratching my head wondering what the heck happened to the tone I just had the day before. Sometimes it's so drastic was sure something blew up!
Anyway, 1st gear and OD2 engaged, and I swear it sounded exactly like tone off Under Lock and Key, which I really dig. But that was at home, who knows how much of that translates to a stage situation.
