not long...about 4-8 hours playing time but they will continue to 'break in' for a while until they level off for a few years...at first my cab sounded like 'cardboard' very stiff....after pushing some air through them (playing through them at volume..) they are much smoother than first...because of the 'style' of amp the QR is it is less noticeable than clean class A amps etc...

honestly I think thats a myth. I've never heard of breaking in speakers in my life outside of this message board Speakers sound good, then bad, then blow, then get replaced. i'm with craig on this one...i never noticed a difference...and i had 2 brand new cabs...i'm not saying that they don't get broken in...just saying that i never noticed a difference....

Matchless and 'Bad Cat' (and others) are wasting their time 'conditioning' their speakers then...they use Celestion V30 and G12-75Ts I believe....like the difference when you get a new stiff baseball mitt and then 'break it in' with leather conditioners etc...man, caveman, big-hair, 80s throwback guitar players....what ya gonna do with em???

I don't know, maybe 'breaking in' is a term I've always interpreted as 'worn'. For example my Peavey VTM cab is worn. Ive had it since 1991. Its sounds like @ss but it used to sound real good. My Marshall is not far behind. My Splawn cab sounds as good and the same as the day I got it, but in a few years those speakers may need changed due to wear.

Yeaup they loosen up.. the foam around edges etc.. ( Shreder75,, the car thing.. you work in jersey? take head inside.. ya never know.

The cab WILL get better (morecowbell)....it is -10 here in lovely downtown Eagle River, WI so keeping my amp in the car for even an hour is out of the question...shreder can you bring just the head in with you to work and stash it somewhere??? I find that 1st GEAR NAILS the Rage Against the Machine vibe EXACT...I keep thinking it is too bright until I jam with a full band and then 1st gear sits real nice in the mix (if you have a decent bass player) though I end up in 2nd and 3rd gear... -10??? it's about 40 degrees warmer here....lol...I have her covered with a towel in my back seat and the sun's out today so I don't think it's gonna be too bad...

Its about 2 right now! LOL Earlier we made it down to -6. I hate winter! LOL
Some earlier posted that the 1st gear had more bite to it? I am really looking for that. Less gain, more bite, and EL34 tone.

BRRRRRRRRRR, you guys are making me cold. I wore shorts and t-shirt yesterday. A friend of mine that runs a local music store has shorts and a t-shirt on all the time........no matter the temp! It was 0 for the past few days and that what he had on. The guy is a UFC trainer, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Shred, I did it at last practice and it did cut like crazy. The other guitarist cranks the presence on his 5150 and the QR on 1st gear (lo input) held up with no problem. It actually exposed his tone quite a bit...it showed just how brittle he was. (And I actually kind of like 5150's.)

I'd imagine it would..it brings out the highs and the mids even more...and it's definetly the clearest of the three settings....hmmm....I'm gonna fart around with some knobs tonight, methinks..hehe..then again, I'm playin' through a crummy cab so whatever settings I come up with tonight might not sound so good through my splawn cab
