Or more specifically, these younger guys will have no longevity making a career out of music because they can only play the smallest common denominator of musical styles and techniques. I'm all for it. More paid work for me!

yea, young guys that strap their guitar down to their ankles, and drop down to 'D' and run their index finger along the fingerboard for a 'barre chord'....when they see me play, they ask: alternate picking? whats an arpeggio sweep? string skipping? a whole different breed these guys....doesn't seem to bother them that they have NO technique for effectively playing single note runs etc...and hey, that's cool...it will limit them though if they want to play different styles other that thrash... I must step up and defend the young'uns a bit. My band plays a lot of shows with younger original bands and there are still good players out there. If you judge by modern rock radio then I can see where you are coming from but is that really a judge by any standards? If you just listened to the radio in the 40’s and 50’s you would have thought there was nobody playing any thing other than jazz standards on guitar but meanwhile the blues guys were out in nightclubs in the south tearing it up. I play with a few bands that have interesting guitar work going on in a few different genres, though not all of it is shredding. I also consider myself still in a “younger” band (I’m 27, drummer 22, bassist 28) and I can do a little finger-dance if necessary:). I think part of the problem is that so much has been done already that it just doesn’t grab people anymore. There have been masters of all styles and most solos just seem stale these days to me. But in defense of your statement, a majority of it crap today and for those of us who do play solos they are either critical or amazed!

Dude, this is 'grandpa' speaking here....back in MY day...if you weren't bringing MAJOR game as far as technique goes, then you weren't taken seriously...todays society wants everything EASY...no practice...drop down to 'D' and learn all the 'CREED' songs in an hour after only playing guitar for 6 months....look, I'm not saying that it has to be full of 'chops' or hard to play (just listen to MY clips) to be 'good' BUT, as 'dirrtycraig' pointed out, later in life there isn't going to be any solid 'guitar foundation' that they are going to be able to bring any 'variety'....frankly, I don't think the new breed guitar guys even care....when 'playing' guitar becomes hard, they will toss it and pick up an X-box...(ooops! hope I ain't stepping on too many feet here...)

steve vai was once asked how he got so good...his response was that he didn't have any cable/internet/video games/ etc. to distract him from playing constantly...

Well the people or band you speak of aren't real musicians, they're just kids out there to look cool. I'm talking about the REAL players out there who do it for the love of music, that still exists in some dark dank corner hidden by shadows of emo-pop-punk-boy who plays his A.D.D. music for the teenie boppers. What's funny is that alot of these people who play that sh*it change up their styles as they mature and usually start playing things with more substance and creativity once the buzz of youth wears off and kids start to laugh at them.

I guess if the high end production company paid me mega bucks, like they are paying the guys playing in those bands, I would jam with guitars on my knees... I think its about the $$$... and what the Record companies want them to do.. ( not what they, the band members are wanting to do from what I hear) and for that much $$$, call me what ever!! LOL... ( i dont know how much they really could play ) then I could chat using my new personal assistant, on a super Mac G5 in the big ol recording studio WE would be in, and have a splawn fest.

The only $$$ being sought is when the record label A&R guy sees how many 'paying' customers are in the audience....then quickly tries to prognosticate if he can translate that into $$$ from 'unit' sales....talent, ability, experience, toss it all out...if they think they can turn a buck...they will be more than willing to exploit you... (don't get me started on record companies.... )
