Okay, after years of mesa, I've really been hearing good things about these amps. The sound clips sound really good as well. Believe it or not, I'm not a huge Marshall fan, though...
Well, I am thinking of simplifying my gear, and getting a QR half stack, and using a Alesis Midiverb in the loop for reverb and delays, and possibly a BBE sonic maximizer or compressor. Maybe even an overdrive pedal.
The tone I like is old school Pantera, any of the death metal bands, etc. I really like a heavy distortion sound, but I do a lot of lead stuff, so I don't need to kill it. I want some clarity, but some pretty heavy stuff.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

buy one....now =D
seriously though, I doubt you'll need an overdrive pedal, especially with the third gear mod. Third gear on OD2 has crazy amounts of gain. Hyper sonic gain. Gain-o-rama gain! lol....
I'm not a big marshall fan either. Or I should put it this way, while alot of my favorites have gotten great tones out of marshalls, I've never plugged into one that didn't sound like an overpriced peice of garbage (no offense to anyone that has one, maybe it's because I could never put the volume up to 11..heh)...
the QR is a GREAT amp. If you do buy one, test it out before buying anything to add to it. You probably won't have to. Although I may be interested in the midiverb as a means of crankin' up the master but keeping it out of the ear drum splitting decible range =D

It's basically either this or a Krank Revolution. I'm not sure which way to go yet.

I've been die hard Mesa myself and after some research took the plunge on a Quickrod. It is not disappointing!!! The first thing I noticed over Mesa stuff I've had is how tight the low end is. It mean it just punches you right in the chest. Also how clean the distortion is, no buzziness.
For heavier work it is very chunky on power chords and tight tight tight for palm muted speed picking. No flub, meaning your chops have to be up to snuff, no hiding behind the fuzziness on this one!
Everyone is right it doesn't need an overdrive pedal but I have a Keeley modified SD-1 that I tried with it and in 2nd gear with the gain at about 1-2 O'Clock it sounds friggin' amazing. So juicy you could cut it with a knife!
I'm not into stuff quite as heavy as you, more melodic metal like Stratovarious, Hammerfall type stuff and it fits the bill perfectly. To my ears it is very warm sounding though. Doesn't have the scooped sound that I hear in a lot of modern death metal, but if you are into old school I think will love it!
I'm getting on the bandwagon. Now I understand why these guys playing them are always sales pitching, it sounds that good!
