Yup the serial number on the amp will give the year.
Gear 2 can be quite bassy, useful in some band contexts but I usually stick to gear 1 unless we're doing VH type stuff then I'll cut over to gear 3.
Yeah some video would be helpful. Always like to hear a Splawn!
Oh, I found that the stock Chinese preamp tubes can be a bit mushy, swapped in a JJ (not sure which position) and it tightened it up. As others have said some tube rolling might help. Be aware the tube sockets (on my SR anyway) are tight as hell, be patient and careful. Once you get them to a certain point they snap in.
