So the other guitarist in my band is Jonesing on my Street Rod... Two practices ago we were playing All Day and All of the Night by the Kinks and he said, "That thing does that tone so well it pisses me off!" He has a Marshall DSL-40 with a creamback and uses a bunch of effects. Then this week we were about to start Saturday Night's Alright by Elton and the singer was asking him what he was doing (he was just standing there) and he said "I'm waiting for him to start the song because I freakin' love his tone on it" Pretty cool... he's been playing for years and has had a lot of different gear and is pretty picky about tone. Bwah-hah-hah!! Edit: Have you guys ever noticed that when someone else plays through your rig you think they sound better than you do but it's not true? He played through my SR for a bit and it sounded great (but I was standing back a bit). Now one aspect of it is that his pickups (PRS \m/ pickups) do have a tone I really like, but overall it's pretty close to mine. I was thinking "Man that sounds great" He's had the same experience and he'll ask people who play through his rig if he sounds like they do and they'll say "Yes you do". I think we're to hard on ourselves sometimes and envy others too easily. Sometimes the grass isn't always greener and as I said once sometimes you just need to realize you sound great and go with it.

The last gig I played (a couple of weeks ago), the soundman and I were talking about Splawn. Apparently he owns one as well. He was talking about how he feels it’s a one trick pony etc. Of course I can get all of the sounds I need out of it. Anyway, we did a quick sound check and played one song. Afterward, the sound man comes over to me and says “Dude, your Quickrod sounds way better than mine...”. Oh, I was smiling on the inside.

Could be that he needs new tubes or you're using better speakers. Who knows. One trick pony? Hardly, my SR is pretty freakin' versatile, better clean than Marshall, all kinds of distorted tones. That's why I got it, sounds great *and* it's versatile.

What settings do guys use on your streetrod ? I just picked up a used head version and it looks to have stock tubes. Bass is really flubby. Cant turn it up past 8 or 9 oclock on the gain channel. Hitting with a boost helps immensely. Playing a Les Paul and Charvel superstrat thru it. No such issues with the same guitars thru my Mesa MK4.

You should be able to turn the bass up higher. I think I have mine at about noon. I have a Quickrod though. Still, shouldn’t matter. Stock power tubes will be Chinese. What are the preamp tubes in your amp? Chinese as well(stock)?

Hmnn...that's odd. Bass should be tight like a tiger on a Splawn, are you using low wattage speakers?

I sold a couple of WGS ET65’s to a guitar player in another local bar band recently and when he came to pick them up he tried out my Quickrod through a 4x12 of Greenbacks. About a week later I was talking to the other guitar player in that same band (the guy who turned me on to Splawn and has helped me discover my sound) and he was saying that the other guy had told him he had to get away from my Splawn because he was wanting one himself after the 10 minutes of playing it. I’ve always thought he has a great sound so hearing that was pretty cool.

Gear 2 can get bassy (JCM800 based, which is a bassy amp). I use gear 1 pretty much exclusively actually... kick it into OD2 for some juice and hit the boost for solos. I also have a compressor at the front of my chain that I kick in for more sustain (don't use it much really). Other settings are: Volume: 9:30 (much higher and the solo boost starts not working so well) Gain: 1:30 Presence and Treble are higher (1:00 to 2) Bass is probably about 10:30 Loop volume noonish I'm playing through a Creamback 65 in the combo itself with a Blackstar extension cab with a greenback in it. This rig/settings makes people drool! As gtrjunior said the cab matters too.

That's kind of what happened to me... in an old band we had a guest guitarist come in for a practice and he had a Splawn supersport (I think) I was floored by his tone... About a year later I got the Street Rod.

It seems like all gears sound flubby in the bass, I have the pres and treble around 10 / 11 oclock and thats getting too bright already.

With that setup you should be tight as a drum.
I’m wondering if a retube is in order? Open up the back and let us know what tubes you’ve got in there...in all spots.

that cab/speaker choice might be a bit flubby relative to others but I would def do some tube rolling.
what kind of boost are you using? A tubescreamer type boost should do the trick.

Cabinet is an EVH 4x12 G12M speakers, thats not the issue. Cabinet is tight as @%#$ with my Mark IV and other amps I have played thru it. Tubes are all stock Svetlana pres and power that I believe came stock when amp was built. I did upgrade all pres to some better sounding tubes to my ears but still no change as far as bass. No flubby bass on the clean channel, I have it set at 12 to 1 oclock. So it seems to get really bassy on 2nd gear od1 or od2. Gear 1 and 3 not as bad. Maybe its just the JCM800 sound the amp is emulating. If I hit with a SD1 type boost amp tightens up nicely and sounds fantastic.

Svetlana would not have been stock, so that may be a contributor. I have rolled every tube you can think of into my Splawn. And to me, the stock tubes sounded the best. Maybe try the Sino Chinese power tubes.
