Good data- Yeah my volumes are pretty low- about 8 o'clock on clean and 10 o'clock on gain channel with gain about 7 o'clock.
One other interesting point- My Fender strat needs to stay in overdrive 2 for good sounds, but my Zion Strat loves to switch back and forth- Joe Barden pups have a tremendous tonal range and this amp really brings it out.

I’d suggest experimenting with opening up the amp (volume-wise) and attenuating with the loop volume. You’ll find the sweet spot!! I also have a MIM Strat (HSS) and the pickups were just ok. Once I swapped them out I liked the guitar a lot better. The Barden pickups are worlds better than the stock Fenders.

My primary performance guitar has a JB bridge, cruiser middle and cool rail neck... That's the first one that I need to demud;)

They wold simply be labeled “China 12ax7B” if you do. You might have better luck with other preamp tubes...? I really like the JJ brand. But if you search on this forum you will find all sorts of recommendations for various brands. I find EHX and Tung-Sol will brighten it up. JJ tend to darken it a bit etc, etc, etc.... Fwiw, I really like he stock power tubes (also Chinese EL34B”. ) they just work best for me.

Dallas is near Charlotte, roughly 3 hours. Have to be there for a conference there in May... Would be nice if I could fit in a visit. Monotone is the other direction, close to Wilmington, and I really should connect with local contacts. Thanks for a good idea and a great thread.

My wife and I have been talking about taking a vacation to somewhere in that area....possibly Myrte Beach or southern N Carolina. We are from New England.
I’d love to be able to stop in and see the Splawn shop in person!!

Very cool, sounds like a Strat, true? Edit: Duh of course it's a Strat, you're "zionstrat"!!! As I said on the vid's comment I like how you showcased the lower gain sounds, so many demos have it cranked! That's great (I keep it at about 2:00) but it's good to have some variety in the demo vids. Saw you got the 4 button switch too... good call. I didn't think it would be that useful since it will just switch between gear 2 and what you have the front panel gear set to, but I end up using the Mode button a ton, especially for solos, kick it into gear 3 and hit the solo boost and I'm golden (without having to go to the front panel!) Your video also has me thinking I may get the chicken head knobs... I like the round gold ones... shiny and sparkly, but on a darker stage I can't see my settings for crap... Anyway, congrats on a great amp, you'll find as you use it there are all kinds of wonderful tones in the Street Rod! Interesting point, so far my singles love the street rod, but humbuckers and mid gain gtrs are mushy... Scott has suggested eq in loop, but I'm way happy with my strats and tele... I love the tone of my Street Rod as well but I've noticed it can get a bit mushy, I have an eq in the loop, wondering if some different preamp tubes would help?

I don’t have any of the original tubes in my amp anymore. The RI Mullard sound great in the clean Channel(V1) and I’m running JJ’s in V2/3. O have a high gain in V3. I swapped between V2 and V3 with the high gain and bought it sounded better in V3 for some reason. Go figure. I have a NOS Mullard in the PI.

I highly recommend a 5751 preamp tube in the Phase Inverter slot.
Slightly less gain that a standard 12AX7 but the clarity should help with any 'mushyness'.
I'm using a NOS JAN Phillips 5751. They have gone up in price a bit over the years but worth it.
