Hello everyone. Okay, some of you may remember my thread from a while ago that I had stopped answering (http://splawnfans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=nitro&action=display&thread=9086), it was because I figured out what the issue was. I was running a weird effects thing that had a cheap power amp thing and it totally sucked my tone. As soon as I removed it from the equation, things cleared right up.
I have a new set of issues though. It seems as though I don't have enough gain, which is a new problem for me. I have some stuff in the FX loop and I am using the loop master on the back of the amp to set the actual volume. So what I do is jack the volume on the front of the amp and use the loop master to adjust from there. There just doesn't seem to be ANY gain even with the gain on 1:00 (6.5/10). Am I going to need to get a boost pedal for this?
Another question; does anyone else scoop their mids all the way out and jack the treble ALL the way up? That's the only way that I can get any clarity out of the amp. If I take the treble down to even 3:00 (8/10) it immediately gets mushy. It's like I shut it all the way off.
For reference, I'm using a 2x12 Avatar with a Gov'nor and a Man-O-War. Guitars are EMG equipped.

Does it have enough gain with the loop bypassed? I never take my gain knob past 11:00 and I have more than I'll ever need.

I should change the way I asked that question. There seems to be no SATURATION. It's so damn dry. I need a little more "fuzz" or "fur" on top of the gain, if that makes any sense.
I'm also pretty tired of having to turn the treble and the presence all the way up in order to get some clarity, and then not being able to stand in front of the damn thing because it's so freaking harsh and shrill.

You still didn't answer my question. Does it sound better to you with the loop bypassed? What are your setting for all the knobs on the od channel?

No it doesn't. In fact, it sounds worse because I can't use the loop master like I usually do, and it gets even more stiff and muddy.
My settings are as follows (out of 10); Resonance: off Presence: 10 Bass: 3 Mids: off Treble: 10 Gain: 6.5
All using OD2.

In my experience;
a bad pre tube, or out of phase speaker makes that. If you can try diff. pre- tube in every position, double check the speaking wiring, then call Cpt. Scott. all the complaining seemed to have started lately with the introduction of the chinese tubes. I have been running US and Soviet tubes trouble free since '10, my friend bought a Splawn with the Shuguangs shortly after me, and had to replace in a few months.
Good luck and don't panic!

The power tubes are Ruby KT88 STR's...so I'm not too worried about those being bad or anything. It could be a preamp tube, but I don't know how to change tubes. Do I have to bias anything? I'm a complete meathead when it comes to changing out tubes.

Turn up your mids!!!!!!!! OD 2 will sound a lot more muffled and be a lot darker than OD 1. Are those mids up yet? Where are you running the channel volume at? Add mids.

If you could, post a clip of you playing or at least a clip of what you consider a good guitar tone.

Hi,
no trick to changing pre amp tubes (the little ones, right?); amp unplugged, remove existing, place new one in, be careful not to bend pins, try not to touch filter caps (large blue or tan/yellow cylinders) and the transformers (big metal cubes).
good luck!
Good luck!

Well, my Zoom Q3 decided to sh!t the bed, so there will be no clips. However, I've come to a conclusion. I took my Nitro around and tried out cabs all week this week. I couldn't find a sound I wanted. I true a boost, didn't seem to help me find thy tone. I messed with my mids, my volumes and everything I could think of. Sadly, the Nitro is no longer the sound in my head. The good thing is that tonight,it will be in the classifieds on here and I can help someone else with their tone journey.
