I have been selling alot of gear lately and have been getting ALOT of low ball offers .Seems everyone thinks their stuff is worth twice what it really is and mine is worth 10% of what I paid for it . I'm not asking outrageous prices either . I currently have a mesa lonestar up for sale for $1175 shipped , $1100 locally. They go for $2400 new . Anyway I know thats not a great price but its about average what a used on goes for . So far the highest price I've gotten is $950 shipped and the thing that really cracks me up is the local offers of $800 cash.Like I'm gonna say, gee if your gonna use cash of corse I'll take $300 less than I'm asking . I thought you might want to pay with Mcdonalds gift coupons or perhaps kellogs box tops .

haggle? If I was going to buy from you, I would offer 900, and we would agree at about 1050 or something. Unless you said the price was firm. Thats a different matter entirely.

Yes,
I sold a ton of stuff on ebay, most of it for what I expected to get. But classifieds; can't even get a call. I can't imagine what things are like in GA, but here in sunny CA tons of folks are out of work, and there is tons of gear for sale between them and the crackheads, so prices are silly sometimes. About 20 Les Pauls for sale at any given time, so why would you spend $2k on a used one?
Your Mesa is an exception, but half the stuff is from China these days, why would you ever give anyone (esp. Guitar Center) $1k + for it? There are such stupid prices on imported guitars here, it's storage that keeps me from having "one of each".
I prefer to deal on these BBs; people who play and like having the stuff, instead of a bunch of dumpster divers.
Take it easy!

It really blows, but you're best off putting things up for a competitive good price and make SURE you DON'T include shipping and put FIRM FIRM FIRM in there.
Say you can't and won't pocket any less than $500 for something? Advertise it as $525 PLUS SHIPPING FIRM. From here on out I will always get someone's address and check the shipping rates before I even accept money from them. It's a bit of a hastle but it's worth it. I had to spend $28 to ship a brand new 535q wah I sold for $70 to a rural area in Washington, so you have to be careful with the shipping man. I've got raped other times too. Spent over $16 to ship pedals a couple of times... I'm always airing on the side of caution.
Your prices are great. Post it at the Mesa board or John Petrucci board and do exactly what I said.

Since you brought it up I'll weigh in.Yours is the older 50/100 combo in blue and has mods. Guitar Center was blowing that particular model out at around $1200 new when the 10/50/100's were released. So the $2400 new claim is a little skewed. I just had for sale a drop dead mint,1 year old Lonestar head. this thing could have passed for new.Hang tags, blank warranty papers and all. I could get no action at $1100. Ended up getting $1350 shipped on Ebay but after shipping and fees I ended up with alittle over $1100. In reality your amp is probably worth $800-$1000.

I thought you might want to pay with Mcdonalds gift coupons or perhaps kellogs box tops . Here's what you have to think about when buying/selling gear. First is this piece of gear in high demand? Second is it a color or style appealing to a large crowd or pigeon holed to maybe a rare buyer with odd or crazy color schemes or boa tolex? (I always buy black or recover the pieces in black) Third make sure you didn't take a bath or your purchase in the event you want to flip it. Forth make sure you take really good pictures of the equipment in the room or environment it was kept in. Fifth make high quaility videos or mp3s of the gear you are selling for buyers to see or hear. I recently sold a Diezel Herbert for 1k more than I paid based on a studio demo I did with it. Having an HD camera and or a full blown Pro Tools rig helps. Always keep in you mind that there are people out there buying low and selling high. Low ball offers will always be there due to crack head thiefs and musicians (sometimes one in the same) are out there selling stuff really cheap to pay for their habits. The gear prices are set on averages also.............just like where you try and sell your home and a market analysis is done to set a price. Same thing. If you are surrounded by public housing, apartments, and trailer parks your home will not sell for what it's worth. They base the price on what has sold in your area that is similar to your home. Is it fair? No. Is it the market we have to deal with? Yes. In short just make sure you don't pay too much for the gear you are seeking in the event you need to dump it.

I agree. The market is saturated with Mesa. Your Quickrod sounds sweet with Ruby BHT tubes and 12AX7Bs BTW.

Depends on which one. Dual Rectifiers? There's a bazillion on the used market now so the demand is low (and they sound like crap). ED's and Mark V's are selling for a couple hundred under retail so even buying new you won't lose your ass too bad if you decide to flip it. In 1984 you could have picked up a loaded Mark IIC+ for $1000 or so. Now that amp sells for $2000-$3000 easily. We'll have to wait 20 years or so to see if any Splawns are selling for triple their original value. Are they worth it? That's up to your ears (and the market) to decide.

I bought and sold 5 Mesas in the last year and have not lost money once. I guess nobody saw the Mark IV that went for $1800 on Ebay the other day?

Sold/traded the lonestar got what I had in it back . I always do get my money back cause I only buy used gear, that is unless I can find something new at a used price . I already miss the lonestar , I modded it and it was sweet . But I'm just a gear whore and it was time to move on . I never had a problem selling mesas' . The market in general sucks right now because of the economy

Glad you were able to escape from the Mesa unscathed.

That's not entirely true. Mark V's and LoneStars hold their value very well. Newer model Dual Recs are holding their value well too. Splawns don't hold their value well, unfortunately. A lot of amps don't hold value too well, but Splawns seem to usually actually sell for about 65% of what they cost new which is crazy.

The reason for reduction in value is there isn't standard colors. If there was one cosmetic choice like most amps then buyers would just concentrate on the tone alone. Instead you have people buying crazy color schemes that aren't appealing to potential buyers. It may look good to the original owner, but look like poo to the buyer (s) they are trying to dump the gear on. I always buy black or recover the amp headbox in black. Or buy a black headbox. Resale values are better on plain looking amps IMO.
