Yep... still rocking' the San Dimas PM! I haven't played either of my PRS guitars since picking up the Pro Mod. It sounds so good through my QR. Seems like they were meant for each other! Since buying the PM and changing the bridge pup out for a Duncan Custom Custom, I also blocked the trem and installed a D-Tuna. This has made the guitar a lot more versatile for me. So much so that for the gig we played last weekend I didn't even bother to bring another guitar.

Mine's been cased up along with most of my others since I moved in September. But I've got a fresh Custom Custom trembucker waiting, and when I retube the amp I'll drop it in and see how she howls!
Duncan just released a pickup I always wanted to try, the 59/Custom hybrid that people have been making themselves for years. If the CC doesn't work out, that's where I'm headed.

Never heard about that one... if you do wind up giving it a spin let me know what you think!

There is a giant thread on it over on the SD forum. www.seymourduncan.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22538Years ago someone there discovered that if you took one coil from a Duncan Custom (the alnico 5 version) and one coil from a 59, it made a killer new humbucker that seemed to deliver everything people wanted. VH clarity, tight bass, detailed mids, etc. It really caught on and everybody started building them. Part of the magic is the asymmetrical coils; less good stuff gets canceled out with the hum when the two coils don't match, like old PAFs. It was always said that Duncan couldn't market a pre-made version of this pickup because someone else owned the copyright on uneven coils. This year they seem to have gotten around that and the hybrid pickup is out. www.seymourduncan.com/forum/showthread.php?t=232213I've always meant to build my own. Will certainly report if I find a home for one.

If you want to try something other than a SD, Smits Pickups do the mismatched coils & sound great. I have a CC-2 neck & db Signature 20k bridge in my LTD EC100T. smitspickups.com

Sounded good even through a Peavey amp! I'm thinking of grabbing another San Dimas Pro Mod and may have to give that one a try. Maybe compare the EBS-2 and the Duncan Hybrid.

Not sure if this is the case for all pickups, but the db 20k is not muddy at all. Just had him to rewind a pickup for me, fast & affordable.

I am headed towards just buying a bunch of quads and testing until I find what I want and selling others off. I just can't decide from all the reviews and threads.

I am headed towards just buying a bunch of quads and testing until I find what I want and selling others off. I just can't decide from all the reviews and threads. I used Mullards for the previous five years. Tubes, more so than amps and pickups, seem to be the worst thing to read about. Nobody agrees how they sound, and every kind has red-plated fresh out of the box for someone. Eventually I read Tim Caswell say JJs were in the original #39 and this, I suppose along with Yngwie's lifelong endorsement, was enough for me to give them a shot. Also I listened to this several times, with headphones, which helped more than written words. This isn't a tone I'd go for, but it let me compare the differences between brands with everything else set the same.

Do you find the JJ E34Ls to sound broader and do they have that nice aggressive mid crunch to them?

No, they're actually rounder on each end, warmer sounding, and smoother in the mids which is a plus for me. Could be the opposite of what you're looking for. The Mullards have a real bark to them that leaps out, which at times was too abrasive for me.
