Quick update: Penta Labs KT88 are awesome. I should have not worried because they sound much better than the Tung Sol 6550's. My amp feels alive and thumping again! Good to hear. I think mine sounds great with the old 6550s that it came with but if there's a greater potential for failure, I can't wait to get them out of there. |

Yeah I mean I had good success with the very first quad of them, 2 years with no issues I think. I just can’t feasibly use something that is prone to problems like that. I don’t have the room to bring backup amps to gigs so the Splawn needs to hold up. I would give the Penta’s a run if you re looking for something new.  |

Yeah man, I relapsed fr a few weeks but I'm back on baord again. No cigs for 2 weeks now. Agrrrhhhh it sucks but I feel so much better. One of these days I will get down there again! |

I don't feel like I need to KILL for one now though, which is cool..I mean, it's a lot of just the habit involved at this point...talkin' on the phone at home..have a butt...get java at work, have a butt...lol I don't really find myself jonesing for the nicotine though..which I guess is good I figure going from a pack a day to one or two a day max is pretty fookin' impressive for my abusive personality...LOL..but I gotta stop PERIOD soon |

DD, where about did you end up biasing for the KT88SCs? (milliamps...) Thanks, Phil I believe I ended up at around 52-55ma. I need to recheck it in a few more weeks. If you are using the standard formula, remember to use 42 watts for the max dissipation of KT88’s. |

Hey, I wanted to let you know that Scott Splawn said not to exceed 50ma per tube. Just had an e-mail with him today about the Pro Mod, 6550s and the KT88SCs.

Thanks, Phil Hmmm...that's not what he told me about the KT88's. The 6550's should be lower but the KT88's needed to be around 52-55 to get around 60-65% plate dissipation. I don't know but my amp sounds good and hasn't given me any problems so I am not messing with for a while!  |

Strange. I just sent a follow up to make sure we didn't get our wires crossed between 6550s and KT88s, but this is from this morning's e-mail:
PHIL: "Can you tell me the ideal range for Penta KT88SCs in the Pro Mod?"
SPLAWN: "Each set of tubes will be different, there is no magic number, you have to go by ear, just do not go over 50ma per tube."

Well I guess it depends on the plate voltage of your particular amp. As long as my calculations are kosher I am sticking with what I have. I'm actually on the cold side of bias according to my numbers. |

That's fine, I just can't figure out why he'd bother giving me those instructions if they weren't definitive. I'm sure he just doesn't want me to blow tubes and since he's not working on my particular amp himself, there's probably very little chance of that happening under 50ma. I'll be sure it gets tweaked to where it applies to my amp.
It's all good. Smoke 'em if you got 'em ... Cigarettes, not the amps.
