Just got a pair of SB's so I decided to record a few comparisons. These are simple 1 track recordings into Garageband. I used a SM57 on axis about 2" off dead center. Presonus firebox. Jackson DKMG with EMG 81 straight into my 50 watt Competition with KT77s and JJ "high gain" preamp tubes. I recorded GT75s, Splawn SBs and Marshall Vintage (vintage 30s) speakers. All were in Marshall cabs. First recordings were all controls at noon(pres, treb, mid, bass and gain) and volume at 9:00. Second recordings I eq'd each speakers to my ears(amp eq only). Don't remember the settings exactly. www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=1062841

Cool, I like comparison clips. Thanks for these. Gave them several listens. Wow. You certain they're labeled right, and the mic never moved?! The poor V30 sounds rubbish, far too soft, sort of muffled, which surprises me because they are infamous for their moaning upper mid spike (which I hear in the room if playing my Competition through V30s). I gotta say, if everything's in order, it may just be the kind of music you play but the dreaded 75 isn't doing too bad here! It's the widest sounding, you know, the most breadth to it from lows to highs with a nice edge on the crunch. I thought the 75 would be the muffled sounding one. I definitely didn't keep mine in my cab for long. The SBs are good, and obviously have nicer mids, sound tighter, but a little too narrow, no space. If these were my options and I were recording this music, I'd mix the SBs and the 75s.
Were the SBs bought new or used? I'm wondering if some break-in would open them up a bit if you just took 'em out the boxes.

The SB's were bought used. The clips are labeled correctly. There may have been one flaw with the recording of the V30. I have two Marshall cabs. A 1960AV(Marshall Vintage 30) and the other cab has SBs on right and GT75s on left. I put the amp on 8 ohms and split the cabs to 8 ohms per side. Well I think when I did the V30 cab I didn't split it. So I had the amp on 8 ohms into a 16 ohm cab. Not sure how much of a difference it would make. I can redo it since I know the settings and I have a template for mic position. In the room the V30 is my favorite. Never understood the V30 hate because in my amps (Comp,Nitro and 6505+) and what I play it sounds the best to me. Still not sure if the Marshall "vintage" speaker is exactly the same as a V30. The SBs sound good too. Only problem with them is that they are noticeably not as loud as the V30 or 75. To me, the 75 seems to record well. I will re-record the V30s tonight.

In my experience, I have to agree. The 75's do record very well. Until my Splawn enlightenment, I always used 75's and they always sounded great. Live and in the studio....

Cool clips!
75s sound better in your recording than in my garage space! SB have a great midrange, making my choice of that or Scumbacks harder...
V30 well...I have heard a lot of great amps ruined by a V30s

Will the V30 hate never end?? I think they all sound good. But in the room the V30(Marshall G12Vintage) is the winner to me. Or at least with my Competition head. When I get my Nitro back I'll see how they compare.

I had those Marshall "Vintage" speakers in a JCM900 cab for a while. Alleged to be the same thing as a V30 but I think not. IMO worked great with my VS100 amp, like gluteus maximus subcutaneous fat with my JMP and a JCM900 at the studio we use. Vice versa for the G12T 75.

I still don't know what the truth is regarding the Marshall "vintage" celestion and regular Celestion Vintage 30s. I have read that they are the same except for the label and I have read that they are a "little" different. I'm actually looking for 4 more of them to put in my other cab Marshall cab that is empty. I'm going to put my 2 small blocks in a 2x12 cab.
