EDIT: updated mix on 6-2 (same link)... Just working on some new instrumental stuff while also trying to figure out this whole mixing/mastering thing. (= FWIW: The lead tone is a Charvel So-Cal, gear 2, OD1, clean boost with a Maxon OD808. The light dirty rhythm during the chorus parts is a Wolfgang Std Dlx and gear 1, OD1 (no clean boost). SB25 mic'd with an sm57 & e906. No delay or effects on the guitars, just a hint of verb at mixdown. Mix Sample / Download Clip[/url] / download

Thanks, TJ!!
I'm nervous to hear about the tone. I've done nothing but raw amp clips with my QR so far, little harder (for me) to drop it in a mix and still sound great, trying not to have all the killer *Splawn* qualities get masked by everything else.

Late to the party! That is super tasteful.
The lead is maybe a little zingy? Like maybe miked too close to center or slightly too loud? I mean if we're talking about giving you feedback here. Really though it sounds great. I did not expect that style.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Are you (Ayton) saying the lead could be pulled down a tad in the mix or are you hearing something like mic overload in the tone? I tracked it pretty low level wise, the mic pre never getting close to clipping. I have two mics on a SB25, a 57 off axis and an e906 sort of 'nipple ringing' it. I'll try pulling the lead down in the mix first, can't record much this week anyway. Thanks again!

Nipple ringing! That needs to become industry standard mic placement terminology. ;D
No, nothing like overload, just a little top end zip, a bit of a hard edge, which happens to me when I mic too close to the center. It may just be that yeah, the lead could come down a notch as it's standing out on its own right now, but all of this is tiny, I really like what you've done. Definitely want to hear the full tune if there will be one.

Ok, thanks again! We're even though - I never heard a little "zingy" for a tone descrip, lol (but it makes sense). I can't take credit for the nipple ring thing though, read it somewhere when someone was explaining to a newb that it was a great place to "start" with mic placement. Great thing about it, I made a stereo file for the lead from the get go, the 57 on the left, e906 on the right - the 57 is capturing the warmer, outter portion of the speaker and the e906 is getting the brighter "zing." I can move the slider left or right to favor one or the other now and I'm not hearing phasing issues. Later today I'll re-up a version favoring the 57.
I re-upped (same link) for now an identical file other than I dropped the lead down a bit just when it really starts to kick in, basically where the guitar volume is finally turned up full (0:55).
I'll be doing a full tune, just didn't wanna get carried away until I felt happy with the lead tone in a mix. Pretty satisfied now, especially if fellow Splawn owners are not cringing!

Hey, I hate bumping this, happy with the feedback given already, but it JUST dawned on me this morn, lol!! The Small Block 25 I'm miking here is squeaky new, I mean a dozen hours on it at best - could THAT be the minor issue as far as the zippiness goes? I'm betting it is! Don't know how I forgot about that! Anyway, I won't track much more of the tune, will give me more time to noodle ideas though while the speaker breaks in!! I guess as a test I could mic the well worn in G12H30 without changing any settings and see if its not as zingy, but really, I'm laughing at myself for not remembering how brand new this speaker is.

Someone on this Forum had stated that they A/B'd a new Small Block with one that was 6 months old and could barely tell the difference. I guess everyone hears things a little differently, but I myself have noticed a lot more warmth since mine have broken in.

Yeah. I hear SBs aren't doped, so break in shouldn't be as tough or quite as necessary as regular Eminence. But break-in is about creating thousands of tiny fractures in the cone, not just loosening up the doping, so I'd say yeah, that might be why it's a little edgy in the recording. I played the new mix yesterday though and it sounded great. The lead doesn't get lost but sounds more like part of the track. Sits nicely.
The mood of the song sort of reminds me of Garsed & Helmerich. Obviously without the nutty eight-finger tapping.
